  1. Yeah did both. I know the heat treating changes the steel obviously making it harder but did not realize it would change the colour if that's what has done it.
  2. Finally got round to posting some pics of my latest project. Had some really good contrast pre heat treating,Black and silver. After heat treating, quench in oil colours changed to more greys. Any ideas or advice? Knife is 80 layers.
  3. Hi, I'm fairly new to knife making and have a bit of trouble in NZ with purchasing steel going on the names of some of the types I commonly see used on the site. My next blade is going to be a mix of 01,1040 and a steel I've found over here called S1 = C=0.6 Si=0.6 Cr=1.1 V=0.2 W=0.2 am hoping to get three shade of colour. Any Suggestions or advice?
  4. Hey thanks for that I will post a picture or two and in the next couple of weeks. One of my main problems is finding the types of steel in NZ that many guys on the site say they are using. Will post something more specific soon.
  5. Hi I'm a guy in New Zealand who has had an interest in making knifes and swords for many years. Have made a few knifes and am now starting to try some pattern welded stuff. Have made simple layered blades and want to make some specific patterns in the knifes now. Want to find out some more on contrasting steels and their makeup. Have limited resorces here in N.Z. Any suggestions welcome
