  1. Latticino, The gentleman is most probably living on Cape Breton island, Nova Scotia, Canada. The shipping charges might be a factor in acquiring some wrought iron. It is W. I. for sure. I wonder what the heat value, & ash and sulfur content of Cape Breton coal is. Does anyone, per chance, know? There is a lot of coal there and the coal tips might have lots of usable coal still. (many of the mines are under the sea bed, I do not think any of them are still in operation. But Pennsylvania and West Virginia are a lot closer. Have good memories of Halifax, N.S. did law at Dal. 2. Charles you are right! as usual, and I am chagrinned. Sigh. very embarrassed, even. Perhaps I forgot about the screamingly obvious, because I had amassed an enormous collection of leather, & saddlery tools long before I ever hammered hot iron. (use them to repair shoes for me & the family) (also make knife sheaths). Regards to you & the misses. SLAG.
  3. 'Post script: The best cheapest way to acquire leather crafting tools is to haunt yard sales. They come up for sale, from time to time. The sets seem to be bought as gifts for people or on a whim, and many recipients or buyers never get around to using them. So eventually, they end up on sale tables. That strategy works fine if you're not in a hurry. Estate sales sell them from time to time too. It took me a while to realize that there are web sites that list local area yard sales and also estate sales. SLAG.
  4. Acetone dissolves epoxy resin. Use it with a very light touch to protect adjacent non=glue areas. I have used a toothpick for areas that have very small diameters That helps limit the amount of solvent applied. Chewing the end of the tip allows more liquid absorption. It doesn't hurt to try a dry run before treating the knife. SLAG.

Have you tried heating and then microwaving the mix? Just a thought. SLAG.
  6. Fine: Then what color is the abyss? Further again, If the funnel is infinitely large then there is no edge of the abyss! SLAG.
  7. Gadzooks !! Sir there is an end. The Earth is flat! Travel far enough and you will surely end at the edge of the abyss! SLAG. P. S. Great analogy.
  8. Michael, Thanks for the heads up. At $10.00 it's a bargain. Latticino's specific suggestions are excellent. Mr. Girard's book covers successful selling in a general treatment. I.e selling all manner of things for every occasion. Regards, SLAG.
  9. Have a look at a copy of Joe Girard's "How to sell anything to anybody." it 's a classic and, in my estimation, superb read on the subject. Long out of print, there are all manner of copies floating out there. (try ABE books or Amazon or etc.) Mr. Girard was the top car salesman in the U. S. for years. The book was a best seller for a long time. SLAG.
  10. Hooray !!! Great news! SLAG.
  11. Glenn's devices look a lot like gigantic wing nuts. (come to think of it, I have been called a wing nut by a few fellows.). SLAG.
  12. Tried urea formaldehyde resin for fixing a hammer head to the handle? An author, in one my references says he only uses a straight pein hammer for making plough shares & not much else. (that is his opinion). Cannot remember which reference & the book is an old one. SLAG.
  13. Bud, You could learn to forge with your good hand and arm.. It is not exceptionally difficult to do. I learned to forge ambidextrously. Switching arms helps fight fatigue. It also allows me to forge in awkward situations, where I do not have to move about the anvil as much. Who knows, your trashed arm may recover given enough time and forge capable. Then you could forge with both arms. Granted, hand forging is not as sexy as a power hammer. But it would not put a big dent in your household budget. Good luck with the procedure & get well fast. 14. Mr. Evans, Canada was a colony as well as the United States. There are two official languages in Canada, namely English and French. The French spelling is defence. The English spelling is defense. Both spellings are correct in Canada. I suspect that defence is deemed a variant spelling in the United States as well. I find your gibe "Guess it took some time for you colonials to forget how to spell" not funny. It is offensive. I do not know why you had to insult a majority of the members of this site. Tens of thousands of Canadians, Newfoundlanders, and Americans died saving Great Britain from her enemies during both World Wars. (It is ironic that it is the hundredth anniversary, this week, of the World War One Battle of the Somme, a horrific slaughter courtesy of General Haig. Haig and his retinue of British military savants ran, for several weeks, several hundred thousands of us colonials, and British soldiers, into a maelstrom of machine gun crossfire). I find your smug, supercilious comment is gratuitous and insulting. SLAG.
  15. You can even use log dogs to connect some of the adjacent logs.and chain other logs together. That is e.g. first 2 logs connected by a dog, The third log is connected to log number four by a dog. And log units 1-2 and 3-4 are chained together, and the next four log assembly are connected in a similar fashion and chained to log assembly 1, 2, 3, 4 . This would result in an intercalated series. Other sequences can be fashioned (e.g. 123 dog connected and chained to another assembly . The choice would depend on the desired flexibility and strength of the whole chain, or other considerations. More than one dog can be used for each connection to make a more robust linkage Log dogs are fairly easy to forge. A lot easier then forging a chain and take less time. Just my two cents worth. SLAG.
  16. Wood is a dynamic substance and shrinks and expands due to many factors .Resin impregnated handles should not move. The process requires a vacuum set-up, is intricate, & requires knowledge & experience. Look up the subject in Mr. Steven Sells book. He advocates sending the knife out to an experienced shop. And I concur with that idea. Regards, SLAG.
  17. What company are you referring to? Also, a reference to the particular thread, and website, that you allude to would very useful to all of us who wish to rehabilitate our files. I, personally hate to throw tools out when I can refurbish them. Thanks, for your post and hopefully, your reply. SLAG.
  18. Mr.Reynolds, Was the tractor supply corp. anthracite coal nut size or rice size? They sell both. Many people are having trouble with the rice sized coal. The nut coal works better. Regards, SLAG.
  19. Wpearson san, Thanks, SLAG. Try http://totallyharmless.blogspot.com/2013/01/forge-and-drawknife-photos.html For good pictures, & an excellent narrative. Also Alexanders Weygers book The Complete modern Blacksmith" is a must own book for anyone who wants to smith woodworking tools. Mr. Weygers was an accomplished wood sculptor and a very good smith. He made his own tools. Also, he was a marine engineer
  20. Mr. Donner, I tried the 2012 reference and it worked fine. But the 2008 reference did not work. You can get the article by using bamsite .com and then directly searching the site using their search engine and the term "drawknife". The two references show up. Click on the 2008 citation and it will show up. I checked it. I tried Mr. wpearson's I. forge reference and did not get any specific article. In general, I have been unsuccessful trying to search "blueprints". The Hofi articles come up but the rest do not. Regards and happy forging. SLAG.
  21. Mr. Donner, Try these articles, http://www.bamsite.org/Index/Newsletters/2008/JulAug2008.pdf and http://www.bamsite.org/Index/Newsletters/2012/NovDec2012.pdf Regards & welcome to the forum. SLAG.
  22. Mr. Powers, Make up a sample library set and you have at least one customer. Namely ME. Regards, SLAG.
