  1. What is the chemical ingredient list on the "brick cleaner" package. I suspect that it is hydrochloric acid. (= muriatic acod). I am really curious. Thanks in advance, SLAG.
  2. What do you propose to do with the ferric chloride? Etch pattern welded steel implements? Ditto, what are you trying to do with zinc. Anhydrous ferric chloride produces much heat when it reacts (i.e. it's exothermic). It's also corrosive. Ingestion can cause great damage and even death. Vapor can be produced, so strong ventilation is required, (for example a fume hood). or the reaction should be done outside with good ventilation). What ae doing with zinc? Zinc gasses can cause metal fume fever when inhaled. For example heating galvanized iron. Any reaction that gives off these fumes should be done with a respirator, and preferably outside. It makes more sense to treat the zinc coating with hydrochloric acid to remove it, and NOT by burning the coating off. A very good friend killed himself by doing just that 11 years ago. SLAG.
  3. Muriatic acid is the common name for diluted hydrochloric acid (HCl.). It has many uses. For example for cleaning up masonry work. etc. Big box hardware chains sell it as well as other hardware stores, and paint & cleaning supply stores. It must be treated with respect. Look up acid handling instructions on the net before using it. Muriatic acid is usually 40% HCl. Which % is nothing to trifle with. It demands careful precautions and handling. But, by all means, use acids where they are required. They do the job. SLAG.
  4. Anthracite is not terrible. for smithing. I use it regularly. (also coke). Search this site for anthracite. There are numerous threads, on this web site that discuss anthracite and its use. Keep the blower on during your smith session. The fire will go out if you turn the air off. SLAG.
  5. Try this. Wipe the whole sculpture with a rag. After that, wash it detergent water to remove any oil or grease on its surface.. Then dry it. Now spot the non-rusted portions with undiluted vinegar. (its 5%, out of the bottle), Leave the salt and peroxide out of it. Keep an eye on it while doing so. (it will rust quickly). When the rust is uniform you can darken the whole sculpture in a vinegar bath, if you wish to increase the rusting. If the reaction is slow warm the vinegar up, and then use it. Vinegar is cheap and most super-markets sell it. SLAG.
  6. If chalk does not seem to work, try rubbing powdered graphite across the teeth in order to get the powder into the recesses between the teeth. The graphite powder can be bought at an auto supply store. The big box hardware stores probably stock it too. It is used to lubricate the interior of locks, (such as door locks). Hope that works for you. SLAG.
  7. Wowww!!! Where can I get me one of them. Is Ron Popiel , of Ronco, still alive? SLAG. Ambidexterity works for me too.
  8. Dunk. if the paper is a bit cold you might consider pre-warming it in the forge, before use. Just trying to be helpful. SLAG.
  9. Do any of your friends have a metal cutting band saw, chop saw, or angle grinder with a thin cutting wheel attachment? There should be some smiths near you that can assist you. Failing all other options, you could rent a suitable tool and use it for an hour or three. SLAG.
  10. Another approach would be to cut the rod in two. That is a longitudinal cut. Then forge the two lengths separately Then there would be no chance of an incomplete forge weld. SLAG.
  11. .The knives are superlative. Perfect examples of skill, design, functionality, and experience. Superb work. Your qualities are invaluable. If you can, please pass it on to the next generation. A lady Anna Mary Robertson, developed severe arthritis in her right hand and could no longer do embroidery at age 78. Her daughter suggested that she try painting as a pastime. She lived to 101 years & produced 1,500 canvases in her remaining years. Her married name was "Grandma Moses", and the rest is history. Her distinctive artwork is appreciated and displayed world-wide One of her paintings recently sold for $1,200,000. My point is, if we can no longer do something, move on and do some alternative, pastime or skill. I have had to make similar choices. We are probably in the same boat. Forgive me if this post is officious, and preachy. I did it to be constructive: to be helpful.. Best regards, SLAG.
  12. That;'s a rotten development. Breast cancer is serious but not invariably fatal. Marg and I have added Holly and, you, & the family to our prayer list. Hang in there. SLAG. & Marg.
  13. Concerning surplus goat's milk. Goat cheese is a cheese fancier's gourmet treat. It is in demand, especially the sharp tasting variety. Check out the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture's extensive courses and course materials for goat cheese manufacture. Their Materials are some of the best available. (one of the Ben & Jerry's founders learned ice cream making from their published books). If they have not covered the subject check the United Nations F.A.O. books for the subject. If the surplus milk must be discarded, consider diluting it with water and using it on your garden & lawn. It makes excellent fertilizer. We discard sour milk in this manner. Cheers. SLAG.
  14. What is this debate defining the word in question. Its merits are irrelevant. The site has several rules of site decorum, and that is one the restrictions. (There aren't many ). Its use would bother a small minority of visitors, that the management does not wish to exclude. So the word in question is verboten. Case closed. Regards to all the gangue. SLAG.
  15. Thanks for the video u. r. l. I never met the man but he seems like a capital fellow. Just moved close to Potosi, Mo. a few years ago. About a decade too late. Again thanks. SLAG.
  16. Metallic pigments are still used in printing. They are used less lately. But are still used. Reference is made to https://www.hdm-stuttgart.de/projekte/printing-inks/p_compo0.htm and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surface_chemistry_of_paper and http://nzic.org.nz/ChemProcesses/polymers/10E.pdf some such pigments are molybdenum reds, copper phthalocyanines, lithol an organic red pigment has a sulfur trioxide moiety in its molecule, chromates, and zinc pigments etc. Printed paper still has titanium oxide, titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, or kaolin (a form of the mineral kaolinite, formula Al2Si2O3(OH)3, added to it. Mr. Frost would you please supply me with the references for your statement: "All the inks and pigments in modern American news papers are plant based and non toxic, even colored." I should like to read them in the original. Regards, SLAG.
  17. Mr. G. F. Infants usually crawl before they learn to stand up, and stand up before they start to walk. Blacksmithing is fun but it is dangerous work in an unforgiving environment. It took me a while, and some practice, before I could consistently hammer a piece of hot iron in the same spot. I put some divots in my anvil before the "lesson" was learned. Beware of smiths that make it look easy. Simplicity, and efficiency looks like a piece of cake. But that comes with knowledge and hours of practice. I am not typing this sermon to yank your chain. But I am concerned that you might become a nasty statistic. Or, quit early on, when things initially do not work out. Good luck. SLAG.
  18. Herr Gote, Nitric acid has an avid affinity for organic compounds. It will readily attack substances like oils etc. Even if they are oxidized solid. Hydrofluoric is Very reactive. Most chemists avoid using it for general chemical purposes. It is so reactive that it pulls silicon out of the glass matrix. Therefor it is used for etching or frosting glass. Regards, SLAG.
  19. Sorry, I did not deliberately try to show you disrespect.. SLAG.
  20. Dr. Powers & Mr. Arkie, Thanks for the heads up. I suspect that Marvel Mystery Oil is not available in Canada. I had a deprived upbringing. I will look up your Internet reference, presently. SLAG.
  21. What is "Marvel Mystery Oil". Is it a proprietary product? If so, what company makes it and where could I buy some? Is "Marvel Mystery Oil " a generic term for any old oil, or is it one specific type of oil that is better than any old for freeing up seized parts? Please excuse me for being obtuse, & easily confused. It has been a lifelong handicap. I hope that you can post a note defining terms. Thank you, & have a good rest of the day. SLAG.
  22. Clean Forge Fires The cleaner the fire the better the results for forging advanced steel alloys, and forge welding. Colored news print should be avoided when starting to light the charcoal, coke or coal, fire in the forge. The colored ink usually has heavy metals in their composition. Metals such as barium, and copper. Other metals can also be used such as zinc, chromium, molybdenum, cadmium, aluminum, and others. If newspaper must be used, for such a purpose, stick with plain newsprint or black ink printed paper only. Wood shavings are a better bet. But never use particle board, o s b., plywood scraps, or pressure treated wood. The glue, in them, is toxic. (such as urea formaldehyde, etc.) Not something that we want to breathe. Wood shavings can be had, by the bagful. at any woodworking shop. They have to get rid of the stuff. You could probably get even more if you sweep up the shop floor, and probably acquire a friend for life. SLAG.
  23. Try heating it and "quenching" the vise with W.D.-40 several times. W.D.-40 is specifically designed to penetrate seized parts it displaces water in mechanical items. But it is a poor long term lubricant. If that cycle does not work than Arkie's suggestion (ATF + acetone), is the next treatment that I would try. Acetone is toxic try to avoid inhaling it very much. Good luck with that . Persistence is key. SLAG.
  24. Another suggestion. Check out this video http://www.thirteen.org/programs/the-woodwrights-shop/forging-the-hold-fast/ It shows how to make two different hold downs, and a bench dog step by step. Good luck, SLAG.
  25. There is a beginners exercise that teaches making a hardy hole holdfast in Lorelei Sim's book The Backyard Blacksmith pages 108-109. It features pictures and an understandable narrative for that project. The book is currently being sold at a remaindered price on a number of websites anywhere from approximately $8.50 t0 $12.00. (e.g. Half Price Books, or Amazon) & others. Of course several of the blacksmith supply companies will sell it for the full retail price. (yeah the same gang that offer coal or coke for one dollar a pound. (shipping included.)) Gotta love a duck. Regards to all. SLAG.
