  1. I wanted to cry when I saw that knife after it cracked. Brian just brushes these things off and makes another one. This means its time to make another one. I need to make a couple myself so we will have to have another go at it. I cant wait to get over there.
  2. I am sorry for not having the pics readily here. I am doing something wrong some how. Here is a link to the rings I made . http://picasaweb.google.com/LDWynn/CopperForging# Ever since I saw Brian do this I have been amazed. You learn so much from forging copper. These same designs can be made larger to form bangles, bracelets, drawer or door pulls. Hand forged jewelry hardly exists. Brian can do these effortlessly. It is a pleasure watching him. The good thing about the copper is silver acts very similar. Just do not get silver as hot as you can get copper. Dull red at the maximum for silver. Thanks again Brian.

    Copper Rings

Brian Brazeal had been kind enough to show me the process to forge some jewelry.
  4. We had the second class this weekend and it went great. Turned out there were only 3 people actually participating, so they got a lot of attention. Patty made a trivet, a couple horse shoe hearts a copper ring, a flower charm, two crosses, she learned to divide her metal up and control her forging. John did great and hung in there with the heat, he made hearts a cross a trivet divided up the metal and got started on a leaf. Brian did great getting the people to be able to see in there own minds what they were trying to accomplish. This is the only way they can learn, ( as he has expressed many times) When he is talking you have to pay attention, that way when you get to that forge it will all come together. I think I learned as much as any of them just helping. Greg and his wife came all the way from Georgia to take this class and he did an excellent job. He spent a few days with us after the conference and went to the Abana Conference as well. He did great and it was a pleasure being around such fine people. Cant wait to do all this again. Friday we will be heading to the Fire in ther Swamp in Picayune MS. Hope to see ya'll there. Here is a link to the meeting in Picayune http://www.dragonswatch.com/solstice/
  5. Thats a nice looking knife. I like cable a lot. What grit did you sand to prior to etching. The dark colors look great. Good job.
  6. It is for taking the class, but like I said if you want to help or watch just come on. We had a blast with the last one.
  7. Hey Country Boy, We do not usually have a meeting after the conference, but we decided to have a class for the people that did not get to be in the one prior to the conference. There will be about 5 people in the class tomorrow. We will do some collaring and make a trivet that Brian has prepared all the necessary jigs for. Then we may make some punches to make animal heads or whatever the people want to do. You are welcome to come and help, watch, or be in the class.

  9. Today is my big brothers birthday. Ricky (Ricardo) is 12 years older than me, and acted as much as a father as much as a brother. I still look up to him and wish him many more birthdays to come. We both got into Blacksmithing about the same time and this has strengthened our bond. Today is your day, HAPPY BIRTHDAY BIG BROTHER. Here is a link to a picture of me striking for him. http://picasaweb.google.com/LDWynn/101109LettingJimCatchUP#5391543780524307362 This is the web site he created for us. www.wynncrafts.com
  10. We had a great time at our conference, the two day class resulted in everyone going home with a trivet, and plenty of forging techniques to practice on. We all met a lot of new friends. David (DGK) offered us a place to stay for the Abana conference and we took him up on it. It takes a special person to allow a couple guys that have been in the heat over a fire all day that have to smell like a couple goats, the use of your home to get ready for the next day. Here are the pics from the MFC Conference. Thanks for this post David looks like I am still dragging. Oh yeah, his wife made the best chili I had ever eaten, (be nice to have that recipe) she also made us a couple pies, Lemon and pecan, she is a great cook, and a sweet lady. http://picasaweb.google.com/LDWynn/MFCCONFERENCE2010#
  11. Here are the pics I took and the people I was able to recruit to take pics. I had a blast, and had never been around so many blacksmiths in my life. I was worried everything may not come together to get there but it worked out great. I would like to thank Brian for coaching me through my first Abana conference, and everyone that stopped by to see us. It was great. Clint got a few pictures with some of the IFORGEIRON crew that we were able to find, we should see those soon. http://picasaweb.google.com/LDWynn/ABANA2010#
  12. That is a beautiful hammer, I sure wish I had one like that.
  13. Brian mentioned these new edges were for the anvils at the Agriculture Museum that do not have good edges. What he did not say, is that he made these so the people that are going to be in the class will have what they need to do the forging techniques he is going to be teaching. Having a nice edge makes all the difference in the world when you need crisp lines. I had been forging for years on an anvil that had one spot on it that was semi squared off. Brian has shown me the difference. These tools are remarkable, you can stand on one side of the anvil and have three different radius's. It is like having a new anvil. Thanks for taking the time to do this Brian I can't wait to see everyone using them.
  14. Its that time again, we are all getting geared up for the annual event. The pre-conference class is only a week away and Brian has been busy getting prepared for what is sure to be a great experience in forging. There are not any spots left in the class and the ones that got their money in to be a part of this class will come out better forgers than they were. I am looking forward to it all, and if any of you can get here next weekend I assure you it will be worth the trip. Our web site has all the conference info. http://msforgecouncil.com/

    pipe thread fuller

This is interesting, I plan to make one just to play with it. You could go either direction, even do some diagonals, makes me visualize manual knurling. Thanks for showing this.

    Tree Project

Smithstudio, its not fold forming just putting a deep vein. Here was an earlier link that describes a couple techniques. http://www.treeproject.abavic.org.au/pdf-articles/How-to-Forge-a-Gum-Leaf.pdf

    Anvil Stand 3.JPG

That is a good question Corlupi, it does not ring, it is a very quiet anvil, because it is firmly fastened to the stand and the stand is anchored to the floor. I drilled and tapped the bottom of this anvil with some large bolts, therefore it is secured down. A steel bas is very quiet as long as everything is fastened together. Brian pointed this out to me, I was not aware of it till then.
  18. I put a couple pictures of the anvil stand I just finished in the gallery. I am going to try and attach them but not sure if I know how. This is a stand Brian Brazeal showed me how to build. It is solid, has racks, it is anchored to the floor, and is a pleasure to hammer on. I did not realize until I got around Brian that even if you are doing light steel work the more stable your anvil is the more work you get out of your hammer. Thanks Brian. gallery_1280_4_47585.jpg

Heres an anvil stand Brian Brazeal showed me how to build. It is very stable, holds tools, at the perfect height, and anchored to the floor.

One of the sets of leaves Brian Brazeal made are in this picture.
  22. Brian has told me about this stump. It is nice to see it. I think he said the big nail is made from 1 1/2 inch stock.
  23. I get cable from a local company that sells cable. I give them a knife every once in a while and they give me all I need. I got Kin folk outside of Cleveland GA, across from Jenny's Creek camp ground.
