  1. Ok, I have a few questions... 1. How do I put that twist on the handle that you see on many RR spike knives? I'm guessing that you heat the handle first then lock in a vice and twist with a wrench of some kind. Also, where would you grip it? By the round part or the part just before that? Oh, and would it need a full turn, or half turn? 2. What is a fast way to put a decent finish on a knife? I know about draw fileing and I've done it before when making cold chisles and the like, but as these are only some of my practice blades I would like to put a quick-but-quality finish and practice my forgeing/shapeing of the blade instead of spending all that time shaveing metal, atleast untill I get a little more experience. 3a. About my forge, it seems to eat through propane, largely my fault for buying a two-burner instead of a single! Is there any way I can get the same heat while reduceing my gas expediture??? 3b. After awhile, the flames tend to flicker a little, especially when it's cold. The tank will get covered in frost and when I shake it up, the flames kick back in full bore! I've tried bleeding the tank and that doesn't seen to help, could it simply be the cold? and 4. When normallizing, does it need to be left out till cooled completely? Or just untill it's magnetic again? If anyone has one or more answers to any/all of these questions, please post them or message me! Thanks!!! :D
  2. When forgeing the metal, is it best to flatten then create the bevel? or the other way around?
  3. Does anyone know how to get an idea of the carbon content of a piece of metal? I have all kinds or metal scrap; round stock, hexagonal stock, etc. Is there any way possible to get a ball-park idea???
  4. Learn something new every day. Glad to know, like that term for it as well!
  5. I recently purchased a propane forge and hooked it up to an LP tank, I became worried when I noticed flames shooting out of the mouth, should this be? As im just starting out and have no prior experience, I had no idea what to expect and im unsure if thats how it should be(and im guessing it is), or if it should have a uniform, concentrated flame???
  6. Thats extremely helpful!!! Specificly the part about the Tempil sticks. I'd heard of them in Highschool metalworking, but they had completely slipped my mind, Thanks!
  7. What I want to know now is; how do you tell the correct forgeing temp of a metal? If i'm correct it's by color, but is this uniform between metals? Or are there variences between high and low carbon metals?
  8. I really appriciate the advice! I especially like the opposing viewpoints because it shows pespective on both ends. Although, the thing I hear most is that I should simply play it out through trial and error. That I like. I'm glad to have your opinions because the way I plan to do it is by useing varying methods and materials, to learn by trial and error, but span it out over different metals. Though I feel as though I do lean towards the idea of "HC" RR spikes due to the availability. I truely appiciate how readily you all have offered up your knowledge, advice, and support! Thank you.
  9. I just took a length of leather at the middle and started wrapping it around, alternating between the two, and put them through a hole I drilled towards the end and then tied um up! Its really very easy and although limited you can actually make a few different designs after you play around with it a little.
  10. How do you control the bevel on the blade? is it in the way you strike the metal or the way you hold it?
  11. I'm just starting out knifemaking and would appriciate tips/suggestions. I've already made two useing an old furnace and plain fire wood blown hot by an old inflate-a-bed blower; a thrower about 2 1/2ins long and a small fixed blade. (I'll try an attach a pic of the fixed blade.) However, they are very rough and made with metal that was too soft; they bend with moderate ease... Anyhow, I just recently bought a gas forge and I already have several hammers, a set of self-made tongs(again, too pliable, but they work ok), an anvil, and all applicable safety equipment. I was thinking that I might get some railroad spikes and go at 'um? I'm more or less looking for a good beginners project that will help me get better familiar with knifesmithing. So if you have any tips, suggestions, or other ideas, please let me know! Best so far out of 2:
