  1. I agree with the last post... do it properly the first time. Take the time to figure out what the problem is and go from there. I don't know what setting you are welding in (personal, industrial, etc.) but think about it this way... If the welders in the manufacturing plant that built your family car used non-approved methods like that to fix their mistakes, would you feel safe driving it? That may be an extreme and slightly off base example, but you get the point. Just remember, any job worth doing is worth doing right the first time. I have Nuclear pipe certification and I can assure you there is no way anything like what you are describing would fly on a job site.
  2. As far as I know, there is nothing stopping you from using flux core wire in that machine. However, bear in mind that welding with flux wire is messy and will not produce welds as strong as GMAW. If you're just doing light work like making hardy tools and such, you won't have a problem aside from cleaning up the messy flux splatter. As with most any welding, the cleaner the steel, the better the weld. Moral of the story... as long as you're not building a car frame or something else your life might depend on, flux will work. Have fun cleaning the mess.
  3. ... your right arm is a little bigger than your left. I really need to work on this problem.
  4. Someone chime in and tell me what you think... when I make cable damascus, I MIG weld around the cable and then cut it off the existing pile of cable I have. This prevents the cable from unraveling. I'm thinking of upsetting the 1" cable (cold) and then lacing in 10 or 12 pieces of copper wire. After that, proceeding with the standard forge welding and hammering of the blade. What I'm shooting for is after final grinding, shaping, and acid etching I would like to see some thin lines of copper running through the grain of the blade. Any thoughts on whether or not this will work before I attempt it? Thanks.
  5. Hey everyone. Obviously new here but not new to blacksmithing. I'm a freight train conductor, Iraq war vet, and a blacksmith in South Carolina. I mostly make knives and machetes but lately I've been doing some decorative stuff and some wrought iron railing. Looking forward to learning from what is obviously a great wealth of info on this site. Thanks.
