  4. thanks rich, yes we have got hardenable steel, and the right formula for heattreating it ,its the warpage im concerned about. another thought i had was rolling the rods between two flat plates while tempering them.that might keep them straight but the logistics of that are pretty trickey too. i guess well have to just give it a go and see. thanks, casey
  5. thankyou thomas, sounds like a simple solution. ill try it and report back here.
  6. because they are so long and skinny they need to spring back to there original straightness.if they get bent they dont shoot straight.
  7. hi guys, ive got access to a whole lot of 7mm rod that id like to heat treat for speargun spears.my question is does anyone have a good method of heating a long rod evenly ,and more importantly a way ov keeping it straight thru the whole process.i thought about welding the ends of the rod to fixed points so they cant move, but i think they would sag when they get to a heat treating tempurature.your input would be appreciated. thanks, casey
  8. hey technovist, good to see a kiwi on here.im from the hutt valley.hard to find blacksmith supplies in nz aye.

  10. hi guys, i have acess to a lot of old shipwrecks near where i live and would like to try and get a few bits of proper old wrought iron to play with.my question is,is there certain parts that are better to use than others eg anchors etc. where the whole ships made from wrought iron? and igenerally how old do the ships need to be to get the good stuff.most of them are around 100 years old. thanks in advance, casey.
  11. i'm using a car air con fan. its got 4 speeds which comes in handy, and it was free too.
  12. ive been putting a length of 3 inch box section in the fire and building the fire up around that.it gets a nice even heat and you can heat treat inside it ,and see whats going on easily.another bonus is you dont get much scale build up. hope it helps.
  13. yeah, i was wondering too, looks too easy.
  14. id like to know what you spear with them,in nz we use that type of gig for eel spearing.
  15. hi,its my first post in here,so hello from newzealand. ive been watching for a while and im pretty happy theres a proper forum on blacksmithing started up. ive got acess to a big (8 foot length of 3inch diameter approx )cambrige roller shaft to cut up, and was wondering if this would be any good for forging into hammer heads etc.if yes, any ideas on the heat treatment.any help much appreciated.sorry i dont know what type of steel it is. cheers, casey.
