Pardon my ignorance, but what are those giant cone looking things used for?
Nice forges everyone! -
One of my projects is a 650 Yamaha. I have the frame stripped, the rear cut off, and am trying to figure out how to make a jig for the rear section.
Good luck on your bike build. Sometimes two wheels are way better than four!

I got all 55 1/2" holes drilled and tapped... I'll bolt the top down tomorrow...
Im going to have to work on some paying work though... I spent about 40 hours in the last three days working on this thing... thats what happens when you have to scrounge and make due with what ever material you can find... I bet I could have saved 15 hours buy buying new stuff...
haha, wish my scrounging spots were a quarter as good as yours monstermetal. Looks like a pretty serious table. -
Not made a blade, but had a guy want an item made from a meteorite he had obtained, allegedly from Jupiter (No source stamping marks on it, but seemed genuine)
The guy was into Egyptology and wanted a tool similar to what they used when preparing the Pharoe's body for mummification. I made that and with the remainder, forged a neck pendant for his daughter who videod me forging it, this video turned up on the BBC site under [google in] "Forging the Bear" the tool's shape being the same as the shape of the Big Dipper or Ursa Major (The Great Bear)
That was a few years ago now, but he has implied he would like me to make some "Damascus" from a number of different meteorites, so I may get the chance to see how they work for a blade, I may even come out of retirement for that one!
That has got to be the coolest thing I have ever heard! A space knife!!! -
Thats cool that you found out some info about your anvil.
My Kohlswa used to be in a barn on my grandfathers property. This barn used to be a ferriers shop around the turn of the century. It was set up on a stage line between two towns, and I'm sure it kept the horses happy.
Now it keeps me happy. lol -
I really like Mr. Blandford's writing and illustration, I have another book from him that does a very good job of explaining different tools and their uses but I can't think of the title.
As the first book I have bought on the subject, I will say it was pretty informative as well. -
I cleared my throat
Out came black ooze. -
And thinking happy thoughts
As my hammer swang. -
These are good sound words.
Just remember, its not only the flying debris coming off of what is worked, but the blades and discs themselves can fly too. -
Been there done that. That drill the doctor uses really freaked me out. Made me wish I could close my eye without closing my eye, thats for sure.

Vinegar? Really?
Learn something new every day. I was just thinking about how to get that crap off my precious.
Thanks! -
Fodder for the 1.25 inch bore cannon you always wanted to build?
Times two. When life hands you lemons, make a lemon cannon!!! -
Thanks for the tip.
As soon as summer/spring comes, I will be moving my forge and stuff outside. I might even build a small shed so that I can continue work outside during the long winter months. -
Thanks!
It seems there is a large wealth of info here, and I look forward to using this site as a reference for all my goings on in the garage. -
Hey people, how ya doin?
I'm somewhat new to swinging hammers, and look forward to learning all I can about forging cool stuff.

I know what a tyuere is, I was talking about the large cone thing that was standing on the floor in some of the pics. I would guess it is to make rings or something?
