  1. Just my 2 cents here concerning Bend. the recent downturn has hit Bend really hard. This allows for very cheap housing, but I can't see there being nearly as much of a market. My family owns some propert there that was passed down to us, It's been very hard to rent it out just to cover expenses lately. Best of Luck, Blue
  2. I don't have any attachment to it. I had found the Badger first before the PW. Figuring on giving both of them a go and see how I like it. If someone is interested in the Badger out of curiosity or is looking for something to start with (semi - local like) I have no problem selling it to them. Heck, I would even trade something or another. I haven't had it long enough to get attached and I'm not greedy.
  3. I believe Practical Blacksmithing has no copyright anymore do to its age. The following link is one of my favorites for technical E-Books. Just click on the blacksmithing and scroll down. There are 4 books on all. Each are a collection of smithing articles from old time magazines and periodicals. Lots of good info on tools, forges, etc. Practical Blacksmithing Hope this helps!
  4. Well, per the official scale of the house (the hated bathroom scale) it weighs in at 148 pounds. May have to try and rub in a bit of shoe polish to better see what the number is. that area is pretty chewed up.
  5. I couldn't get a picture that shows any detail, but I make out the center number to be a 5. To be honest, have no idea what that represents
  6. I will try that and post a pic of the results. Blue
  7. Hello everyone, I recently had a very good weekend where I managed to pick up two Anvils after 2 months of having no success. I was wondering if anyone could tell me exactly what I managed to pick up. The first Anvil weighs in at 80.5#. This anvil has a large number 8 and some other mark next to it. I paid $130 for this anvil, even though there was the chance it was more of an ASO than a true anvil. The face has quite a few nicks in it, but the edges are pretty clean. The second anvil I feel a little better about. This anvil weighs 146#, has a clean face and good edges. There are numerous markings as well. Think its a PW, but not sure. The only issue of concern for me is that while cleaning off the built up rust, I found what looks like a crack under the horn. From what I can see, it looks like the numbers 159 in the first picture, and 155 near the pritchel hole. BTW, paid $300 for this one, though I do feel a little better about it. Thanks for the help! Blue (ps i hope i got the pictures right, hate one that end up taking up the whole screen)
  8. Well, I have to say I feel your pain, but I recently got lucky myself. I had been hunting for an anvil for about 3 months and all I had scored was a piece of shaped RR track. This weekend the wife and I went to a huge flea market. While I was looking at old horse shoes and RR spikes she was looking at furniture and other odds and ends. Ended up finding 4 different anvils and 5 post vices. Only 2 of the anvils had decent faces, and one didn't ring any bells for something I would recognize. Ended up bring home an 81# anvil and a bunch of hammers and small scrap metal. Next day I was feeling pretty pleased with myself when I got a call back from a women I had contacted over a month ago about an anvil. Ended up she had a bunch of no shows........ so I scored a 145# anvil (think it's a mouse hole). GREAT WEEKEND!! Next on the list: -Swage block -Anvil stand -Shed to put it all in Anyway...... don't give up hope. I recommend using craiglist search engines like "Craiglook" or "Craigsearch" to search all of the surrounding areas. Find out where the large flea markets are in your part of the state. Don't be afraid to drive a little to get there. I put over 1K miles on my little truck this weekend between the flea market and the private owner. Best of luck!!! Blue
  9. I would pitch in $50 for it. Would probably need to go through Glen to make it work..... not to mention he would have to translate all the data to the BP format. Blue
  10. Thanks chyancarrek, looks like I was a little late on this one. Blue
  11. Well, my thought was to hopefully get the person to sell it to me without waiting to see if any other offers came through that were better. I made the assumption off of the picture that this was anywhere from a 300 to 500 pound anvil. figure it would easily be worth the $400. Doesn't seem to matter as I have yet to hear back from the individual selling it. I think MonsterMetal beat me to it :)
  12. xxxx, just sent this guy an email as well. figuring you beat me to it though. Grats!
  13. Hello all, I have been lurking on this site and the N.W.B.A. site for quite a bit and slowly gathering tools as I come across them. I have gotten an old buffalo forge, some hammers and even abit of scrap. I think I may have just found an Anvil as well. I found this on the local craigslist. No name or weight given, but asking $350 for it. I put in an offer of $400 and am hoping for the best. Here is the anvil and here are the stats with it: Table 22 1/2"x6", overall length 37", height 14" Hardy 1 1/2 “square. Any one have any idea what type of anvil this, or what the weight may be based on the dimensions? I figure that for the size, even with pitting, there are bound to be some clean surfaces to use. Has to be better than my current chunk of railroad tie... Thanks all Matt (bluemamoo)
  14. The initail link above didn't work for me, so I tried the COSIRA search as suggested. After a bit of searching, I found the books here (in PDF). http://www.hct.ac.uk/Downloads/craftpublications.html Hope this helps someone. Matt
