thanks guy but that won't help I don't have a computer I'm using my palm pre. And I can't upload pics from it to this site. And to the guy who said he was going to hurl, sorry about the comit I made it was uncalled for. But we all (even most of you) started from nothing. I'm still learning this art. And I want to get good at it. But any way. At my job I had a journeyman farrier come in I showed him my anvil and he said for a free anvil it will be ok for what I'm doing. And last I want to add sorry about my spelling. I have issues with my memory. Again thanks for the feed back.

well sense I can't put photos on this site yet if any one cares I have some photos of my anvil on my facebook. Just surch for scott surber. And tell me what you think and later I will take some pics of my really cheap home made forge and my first knife I made with a claw hammer and a railroad spike using a rail roadrail as anvil and carcoal oak lumps for fuel.

thanks for the info guys. And this is my first anvil but iv made plenty of knives on my railroad rail I was just asking some questions. Still being kinda new at this I was hoping to get some good info from some of the ppl who have been doing it for a long time. Thanks for the reply. o no I wasent planing on doing it myself I was going to get help or take it somewere. And the reason I said it needed resurfacing is cause it has some surface rust. But I don't see any hammer marks or any thing like that. And hell for all I know it was probably used just so old I can't tell. Thanks for your inputs. O and I'm making knives from railroad spikes right now. And using a 1.8 lb hammer.

hey guys it's been awile but I'm happy a FRIEND gave me a 76lb anvil on the front bottem it says fisher with a E stamped on the bottom and on the side the is a number 8 and on the back the date 1899. Now I know it needes to be resurfaced but I'm not shur about reharding it. It has some surface rust and one of the corners is rounded from rust but that's it. It has a tool hole and hardy hole I'm happy as hell. Now my real question is will it be good to make knives with or should I just try to sell it and get a bigger one. O and the top is still very flat I don't think it's been used just looks like it has sat around. I would post pics but I haven't got a computer and I can't put pics up from my palm pre to this site. hey its me again with ( you guessed it another question) ok well a friend of mine gave me a really good looking 10 pound anvil he used it to make knives and some of his knives look really good. Well my wuestion is I know just cause its free don't always meen its great. So will a 10 lb anvil be good for me starting out again I'm making knives. Starting out using rail road spikes cause I have like 40 of them. Any input will be great. O and I'm using a 2 lb oilfield hammer with a good flat end he gave it to me told me it was like a 200 doller hammer and a 1.8 lb trupper a little bit rounded ends but not much. So with thouse hammers is the anvil still ok or will I break it faster than I can make lnifes.thanks again

thank all you guys for your input. All I'm doing is making knives and swords (starting with knives first). So I think the knife makee forge will be great I'm going to order onein the next couple of months gotta get ready for the baby first. Well thanks again.

ok instead of going threw the trouble of making my own I was going to buy a chile forge single burner but with a 700 doller prise tage shipped to my door I can't do it right now so I went on ebay found a single burner knife making forge for 300 dollers I did not look at the shipping coast. But I was wondering are thay any good. Is it worth my money and it says gas forge so I can use propane right? Well let me know what you guys think thanks.

I don't get mad when people are trying to help your just helping and thank you I won't do it but like the last post said could I use the leafe burner as my flame. And I guess I will just stick to my first idea and make one fom a thick piece of square tube add some doors and line it with kaowool a fire brick and I'm set. That is if the leafe burner works. I'm tierd of using wood it burns way to fast for me. Thanks guys.

ok so I went to my dads today he gave me about 40 railroad spikes and big bolts and 2 plates thay use to hook the rail to the tie and he also gave me 2 propane tanks 20lb ones and a leaf burner don't know if any one knows what that is but thay look almost just like a propane forge burner you can buy. One of the tankes thay won't fill so I was wondering if I cut doors on the top and bottom mount it on its side and attach the leafe blower on the side or kinda in an angle of the propane tank will that make a good forge and if so can some one send some photos so I can see some ideas I kinda seen a vodeo on you tube it looks like this guy did the same thing o and I have some red brick to put in the bottom so my steel can sit on it. Well any ideas or sugjestions would be great thanks guys. Sorry I can't put any photos up right now cause I use my pm pre for the internet no computer. It was stolen. Thanks guys.

well guys I just orderd the complete bladesmith today it should be here monday. And my friend droped off a section of railroad rail for me. Now I just have to get a welder and make my propane forge I got some blueprints from online ( the knife network workshop how to build a propane forge and burners ) check it out and see if it looks good to you. And my home made charcoal forge melted I used a old propain grill I hade it did not work so I thought what the xxxx I will give it a shot and I melted a hole in it so I'm going propane. I'm a few steps closer to my shop I need alout of stuff still here is a list of what I want to get a real anvil belt grinder drill press vise polishing wheel forge and a few more tools. well I will talk with you all later.

thanks. I will try both ways. I guess it will work until my baby comes tjen I can spend more money to buy the real thing.

hey I've been told by alot of people I could use a rail road iron for my first anvil but I can't for the life of me figure out how the top is curved and the bottom is flat but wide and kinda thin and if I use the bottom how can I mount it and on whatcan some one email me some photos on how to use and mount them and one what to mount it on. thanks for the speedy response but I got anothere questeon this one really has nothing to do with blacksmithing but more along the lines of this site I don't have a computer I use my phone the sprint palm pre it does not have flash player yet and I was wondering if that could be the reason why I can't veiw photos other members post. hey people I can't find if this has been posted yet or not if so sorry but I'm looking for a place to get free blacksmithing,bladesmithing and what not catalogs really can't aford 30 dollors to by one but I was thinking there should be some some were on line to have mailed to me I get the, all the time from places like knights edge and stuff if you could post some websites thay would be cool. I've looked but with no luck. Thanks all.

hey every one I'm new to all this but I've been interested for a long time I just never thought I could do it well I'm in the prosses of making my first forge ( coal) and trying to hunt down a good cheap steal anvil so if any one nows please just let me know or if you have any tips that could help me in my new hobby I would be very thankful. Also if any one is from weatherford TX or close by that cold tell me about local places to get blacksmithing tools and such that would be great well I guess I'm done when I make my first blade I will post up pics and stuff thanks all.
