  1. Also, I really like that bowie!!
  2. Fantastic work!! I made a knife for my brother a while back and made a sheath for it too. It was the first knife I ever made. I think the knife turned out far better than I could have ever hoped for as my first attempt. The sheath on the other hand left a LOT to be desired. Your sheath looks a lot closer to what I would like to have made. Do you have any advice as to where I can go to learn how to do better leather working so my next knife has a sheath that looks like it belongs with the knife?
  3. Very nice!! Looks like a lot of work could be done with that thing. Seems to be very well built.
  4. Man, the lines on that thing are awesome. Do you do all of that free hand? That knife is beautiful.
  5. Looking forward to more pictures!! It is beautiful!
  6. If you still have them in Aug, I will be driving through there and would be willing to talk to you about the forge and the anvil both. Or which ever on you still have at that time. Is there any contact info you could PM me (like an e-mail address) so I can get in touch with you then if you still have them?
  7. How themed are you trying to go with this thing? Porcelain handle? Pummel from the valve handle from behind the toilet (the oval type)? There are some pretty sweet faucet handles that would make for a cool looking guard. Just a thought. This is a legendary sword after all.
  8. Demid, your work is beautiful. I am looking forward to seeing more. You may know lots of people that can do that. I do not know any. Heck, I can't even forge weld yet. I would LOVE to learn how to do that.
  9. A short story about what good enough has come to mean to me. A while back, I was in a band. I played bass.....well I still play bass but anyway. We recorded 5 of our songs. After we finished recording, the guy producing the demo for us gave us our CD. I listened to it, which is the only recording of our songs that we ever did, and HATED it. All I could hear was places where my notes didn't fall exactly on top of the kick drum or where I had popped my strings but didn't get the metallic sound of the strings bouncing off the fret board like I should have. I still can't listen to it, to this day (over 5 years later) and enjoy it for what it is, a demo. The guys in my band couldn't hear the flaws i heard. Nobody that heard it could hear what I was talking about, but I knew it wasn't as good as I could do. It will forever be flawed to me. It will never be good enough to me. And now I have to live with it. So, with that lesson learned, "Good Enough" to me is when I can live with it for the rest of my life.
  10. Hello. My name is Jayson. I have been a member for a little bit now, though I only recently (yesterday) pounded my first piece of iron. OH WHAT WONDERFUL THING!! Teejay invited me over to learn a thing or 50. And what an awesome guy Teejay is. Willing to share his addiction...er...knowledge with others and everything. Thanks a lot for the invite Teejay!! So, after leaving all I can think about is where I am going to get the stuff for a forge. I have already looked on line for the scrap and junk yards in my area (there are 3 junk yards a one scrap metal place near me that I have found so far ). I told my wife about all the stuff I got to see and the new things I had learned to make. I also told her that I made a leaf all on my own. You know she had the nerve to ask if she could have it!! That thing is MINE!! ALL MINE!! It is the first thing I ever made. I NEED it. I am not sure she understands.....how could she. All she sees is a little metal leaf, not what it truly represents. My hard work, the starting place of my skill. The first bond between me, the fire in the forge and the hammer in my hand, a symbol of my new addict.... love... er....hobby. Help? I don't need help. I know how to get to the blueprint section all on my own. :D
  11. I am praying for you Frosty. Get well soon. Jay
  12. I was in a feed store today looking about and walked past some spurs. I as I went past I asked myself "I wonder if people still forge spurs? That may be a cool thing to try out." And then I came home and found this post. Those look awesome by the way.
  13. Putting walls on the sides that your breeze comes from that have roll up doors can give you a nice cooling effect. I am not sure you are in an area that only has the breeze from one direction like I do here in Utah (the mountains here make the wind only come through in mostly one direction) but it is a thought. Even hinging the walls so you can swing them open could be a very cheap alternative. Possibly with a wheel to support the wall weight. Eh, just a thought. May not be practical for you.
  14. That is a really nice piece of work Kevin. Thanks for sharing it with us. Also, thanks for the story too. I will have to remember that the clay, when thicker, holds more heat and allows that heat to conduct a bit further than I would have though. I see exactly what you are talking about with your line that dips to the edge of the knife. I have yet to make a knife, but plan to when I get some experience under my belt. And thanks to you, I have learned something that makes sense but I would have had to learn on my own had you not shared this. PS if you plan any more trips, please make sure to keep out of earshot of any pointy objects that may take offense that they were not invited. :)
  15. I guess if your anvil doesn't have a good ring, you could wet it and make it pop to get people to come see what is going on. Sending flying scale at them after may not work out in your favor though :(
  16. When I was in the military, I worked on a radar that had a heat exchanger on it. It was like a radiator for the transmitter section of the radar. I think to this day, I havnt heard anything louder except the jets that took off next to it. It was so loud that you had to have 2 forms of hearing protection to work near it. This thing sat about 40-50 feet from my shop. If you were standing right outside the back door of the shop, you couldn't talk to someone standing next to you without almost yelling. All we did was put one piece of ply wood on the side of it that faced our shop, perpendicular to the fan. It made it 500 times better. It reduce the noise to a level that only required hearing protection if you were on the other side of the plywood or working directly on the heat exchanger. I am guessing that if you put baffling on the ceiling and stood a barrier in front of the anvil that you should be good to hammer away. The barrier would reflect a lot of the noise back to your back walls and most would be absorbed by the baffling. Just a thought, and a really cheap one. Carpet makes for good baffling. Also....there are different peins on hammers? Anyway, which way to the sword making forums? ;)
  17. I would very much like to come out but I work swings this whole weekend. This is by far the best forum that I have ever been on. EVERYONE here is so nice and helpful. On most forums, the people are quick to put someone down and make fun of their ignorance. I am very happy to have found this place and hope to some day share things that I have learned and experiences that I have had.
  18. I posted this in the "New to blacksmithng" thread started by cloud. I figured that maybe Thomas or Ted will see my questions better this way. So here is what I wrote: Thomas Dean, I think I may have wet myself when I saw that there was a blacksmithing event about 60 miles from where I will be at a time that I will be there. I have never picked up a hammer in my life with the intentions of shaping metal. Though since I was about 8 years old and saw the blacksmith at Greenfield Village in Michigan by the Henry Ford Museum I have always wanted to. Now that I have my own home and am out of the military, it is looking more and more every day like it will become a reality (my wife was a whole lot more accepting of the idea than I had thought she would have been and only laughed a little when I told her about my near life long dream.) How would I go about attending the SCABA 13th Annual Conference? I will be in OKC for the whole month of October attending school at the FAA academy so those dates work out VERY well for me! Just to be there and watch would mean a lot! I don't expect anyone to let me pick up a hammer put smiley face shaped dents in their anvil....but if they did ...... Ted T, since you are an fellow Utahan, is there anything like the SCABA here in Utah? Also, is there anywhere around us that sells anvils? I have been striking out in the places I have been looking. Thanks
  19. Very nice! They look amazing. The contrast in metal came out very well. Beautiful!
  20. I was wondering the same thing. Please, do tell. It looks awesome. I have been lurking for a while. I had to ask about this though. I love these forums.
