  1. Thanks for that I'll look into metalizing and talk to the galvanisers Cheers Will
  2. Hi, I am making a gate at the moment which is approx 1.5m square approx half of it is to be filled with a sheet of 4mm plate tennoned into the front, back stiles and bottom rail. There is no top rail. I was going to have it hot dip galvanised as it's going pretty close to the ocean. This is traditionally made gate with no electric welding. I'm a bit worried bout the plate buckling during the gal process. Has anyone done anything similar, will it be alright? Also I need to paint it after, What exactly is 'Tea wash' or equivelant, is it possible to mix it up yourself? Thanks
  3. What accually is the T wash solution? I am in Australia and trying to find some, but would be happy to make it of it can be done
  4. I think your best bet would be to use a hammer that is softer than the anvil face so while your getting hammer accuacy up to speed your not damaging the face of your anvil. It's much easier to dress up a hammer or make a whole new one for that matter than doing the same thing with your anvil. You can soften your hammer by taking out the handle and heating it to higher temper temperature then when you originally heat treated, I'd try a dark blue. As someone alreay mentioned working on the edge of the anvil is always a good idea when forging tapers.
  5. Making it out of sheet is great but another way which is perfectly feasible is if you have a peice of say 3" heavy wall pipe to forge the end down in a swage and flare the other end out to the size you need. It would probably be quicker too.
  6. hi i'm an artist blacksmith from eastern Australia, just trying to figure this whole thing out.
