Without any modifications, these tongs hold flat stock better than most pliers. Some ancient smith probably came up with this idea thousands of years ago. These are handy if you don't have any 'real' tongs, or, if you need to put several pieces in the forge at once, and don't have enough tongs handy.Tong 'rings' or 'clips' work fine on these tongs.
