  1. Does anyone know the proper height a stake plate should be mounted at? I came across a Pexto plate that fits some stakes I have. Thinking of making some sort of stand for the plate out of wood. Just need to know proper height. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry to bring back such an old post.
  2. Hello all, My father recently bought me a used Jet 6x48 belt sander/disk combo and an old harbor freight drill press for my shop. I have been blacksmithing for about 6 years, but don't have too many power tools in the shop. Up till now, I only had a 1x30 sander, small bench grinder. and a portable band saw with table. I've never been a knife maker, but would like to try my luck. Any advice for using a 6x48 sander for knife making? I realize a 2x72 would be ideal, but how can I make the most of the 6x48 that I have? Is anyone using a 6x48 to make knives?? Any advice from those with experience would be appreciated.
  3. Maybe a dumb question, but I have read some folks use linseed oil on their vises and tools after they clean the rust off. Is this effective? Does it remain tacky? I have used it on tool handles, but never on the metal. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I have an old vice and some old tools that could use cleaning up. Thanks
  4. Perry, was looking at that website, but didn't find the exact part...which one did you get? I too need to pick one up. Any pics? Sorry to revive an old thread. Thanks
  5. Glad to hear Thursday is a good tailgate day. We will be there Thursday for sure...can't miss Blacksmith Christmas!
  6. Well, looking at my schedule, my only option is driving over on Thursday and spending the day. The Meet doesn't officially start till Friday...will there be enough tailgaters there to justify the trip over? I hope so, it would be nice to go to a sale where everything is blacksmith related. No sifting through all the other assorted flea market stuff.
  7. Well that is sad news. The earliest I could be there is probably 6:00 Saturday evening. Looks like I may have to wait till next year. Quick question, you say some vendors come in the middle of the week. I didn't think anything started till Friday? If vendors are in town on Thursday, that would be a possibility for me. Thanks for the info.
  8. I have family plan that weekend, but could probably head towards Troy Saturday evening. Is anything going on at quad state Saturday evening and Sunday morning. I thought about just waiting till Sunday morning and heading out real early, but it looks like a 4 hour drive. Will there still be enough going on Sunday to justify the early morning drive. I would really like to hit the tailgate sales, but don't want to show up and have everyone packing up. Any advice would be helpful.
  9. I would like to try my luck with a striker, but not sure what type of hammer to get. I have read that the heads ranged from 6 to 12lbs and bigger. I also read some people preferred shorter handles, around 24 inches. So if anyone has experience striking, what type of hammer would you look for? My big anvil is 250lbs plus. Probably working stock 1/2 inch to 2 inches. Any suggestions on where to find one would be appreciated too. Feel free to post pics to give me ideas! So what is your perfect striking hammer.
  10. Hello all, I am new here...actually been following this site for a long time, but this is my first post. I'm hoping you can help me with hole punching. I have made my own punch out of coil spring, and it works ok, but it is for small holes, long and thin, and I bend it often. I have several antique punches I got at flea markets that are better, but too short to hold over hot metal and punch for long. I would like to add a handle to one of these punches. I have used a commercial stubby handled punch from blacksmith depot that is great, but it is big, and they aren't cheap. Looking to punch small holes for something like a decorative leaf hook. So what is the best way to make a small handled punch? Weld a handle on? Wrap it with Quarter inch rod? Is it difficult to make your own stubby punch? If you could post some pics of your punches so I can get ideas that would be great. Thanks in advance for your help. This is a great site and I have gotten tons of ideas from here!
