Does anyone use Paste wax such as Minwax Paste Finishing Wax or Johnson's Paste Wax or a combination of wax and other ingredients on hot metal? I tried the Minwax on a forged leaf as an experiment and it worked nicely. Just wondering if any of you have had any experience, good or bad, with it. BTW, this finished project will be an indoor item...
Thanks,
Scott

Bird Bath
01 September 2011 - 03:14 PM
This project was designed to replace the original pedestal for a bird bath that belonged to my mother-in-law's mother. The original pedestal was broken during a move because it was frozen to the ground and an over zealous nephew insisted that he could free it. He did but it cracked in a bad way. Long story short; My wife announced "Scott can make a new one!!"
I've never done a tree before and the original idea was to just do simple branches twisted together but it .... "evolved"
the finish is, on the trunk, concrete "stucco" texture to "look" like bark, and branches textured with stick welder and 6011 dragged up and down. Final piece painted with acrylic to again "look" like Bark then coated with flat clear enamel.

Fork
01 September 2011 - 02:38 PM
My first attempt at a BBQ fork. 1/2" (30.5cm) square hot rolled by about 14(?)" (35.6cm) forgot to measure initial length and cut a couple inches off before cutting the fork split (used a hack saw and split 2-1/2" (Did measure that
)) Final length is 18-1/2" (47cm)

Welding O-1
30 March 2011 - 02:50 PM
I ordered a piece of O-1 drill rod to use in a machine I'm building. I'm not entirely sure but I think its coming not-hardened. My question is; can it be welded by conventional means? I plan to use MIG and I need to weld it into the end of a piece of mild steel pipe as part of an axle type shaft. I'm not worried about rehardening as the O-1 should be tough enough for this application anyway...I hope. Just wondering if I can get away with welding it to mild. I figure I would preheat it a little anyway.
Thanks in advance for input
