What did you do in the shop today?
seldom (dick renker) replied to Mark Ling's topic in Blacksmithing, General Discussion
What did I do in the shop today? I lit my forge for the first time in 6 years. Did I make anything? No. Did I hit hot iron? Yes. The shop has been in storage for six years because we moved from near Rochester. NY to Taunton, MA. So the shop spent a lot of time getting rides from NY to MA and living in storage units on both ends. During all this I was working 5/6 days a week and it was a 6/7 hour drive to get to the storage in NY. I surely will not do that again. At any rate, its all here now and workable. -

Nodebt, if you travel to the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer,,NC you can see a large Shay. The l;ast I knew it was still operating. I helped overhaul it in 90's. -

The new price standard for anvils
seldom (dick renker) replied to Glenn's topic in Anvils, Swage Blocks, and Mandrels
Searching for anvils can be fun. Start using Thomas's method. While your using that one, visit antique stores, flea markets, auctions, craigs list, market place. I watched an anvil for a year at an antique store before I made an offer, they didnt take my offer but I didn't pay what they were asking and it went home with me. Takes some patience. -
Share something the world doesn't know about your job
seldom (dick renker) replied to rockstar.esq's topic in Everything Else
My current job is an EIC, employee in charge and formerly called a flag man on a railroad. Main job is to keep contractors and trains separate and still keep both working. it is not a physical job but mental and there are nights I come home exhausted. because if the trains and contractors get together it will be ugly. often time you end up juggling like a one armed paper hanger, many moving parts. -

I would suggest contacting the new york designer blacksmith group. They have a chapter in the buffalo area. -
Was doing a demo shoeing years ago and threw a hot shoe on the ground to cool. some dad who was watching went over a picked it up and dropped in same motion. I asked him if he had seen enough. he didnt say anything.

seldom (dick renker) replied to Glenn's topic in Blacksmithing, General Discussion
Frosty ive got too many holes in my shirts and have had a fair share of pokes from the wire brush not to take note when its being done. I finally bought an apron that covers me front from neck down to knees. prior to that i used my old farriers apron the saved my legs but not much more. -
