  1. One variable no one has mentioned is the heat of the stock. dull red is a lot harder than a bright heat and would cause more shock. As a new smith I spent way too much time beating on cool metal.

    Hi guys, Thanks. The blade was quenched in veg. oil and dif. tempered, sanded to 600 grit and etched with hot vinegar / polished several times to get the look I was after.
