One variable no one has mentioned is the heat of the stock. dull red is a lot harder than a bright heat and would cause more shock. As a new smith I spent way too much time beating on cool metal.

The blade was quenched in veg. oil and dif. tempered, sanded to 600 grit and etched with hot vinegar / polished several times to get the look I was after.
Hi, Fist post here. Blade is old buggy spring, fittings are chainsaw chain damascus, Handle is black walnut.
