  1. I've built a small forge with the ceramic blanket type insulation and I want to build something new. I have become confused by what I've found on the web about Duraboard insulation so I thought I would just ask a few questions. Does one inch Duraboard insulate as well as two inches of ceramic blanket? If Duraboard doesn't insulate as well as two inches of blanket do you recomend one layer of blanket then a layer of board or just two layers of board? Will the Duraboard deform (sag) if used as a flat roof for a 9x13 inch (inside dimension) forge? Hope the questions aren't to common, I've just never had my hands on the stuff. I've looked around the web and have seen conflicting information about the above questions so if you've got experience with any aspect of Duraboard please share. Thanks for your time.
  2. Does anybody here in MS know anything about this anvil? Its for sale out of Arizona but is said to be manufactured in Louisiana. I've not heard back from my email inquiry. Seems like a resonable prices for a 4140 anvil. ANVILS

    cosira books

Was going to thumb through the Cosira books again but when I attempt to go tothe web page countryside.gov.uk (which is where I have been going to locate the books) I'm getting the Natural England home page. I can't locate the books on that site. Help getting back to the cosira downloads would be appreciated. Thanks
  4. Anyone have any information about these anvils? I was browsing the photo gallery and saw some pictures of them. Beautiful anvils, would like to learn more. Are they still being produced?
  5. John N are these the same machines the gun industry uses to make their hammer forged barrels? I so I've read a little about them and they appear to be very expensive to tool up for different shapes.
  6. Is anyone currently subscribing to this publication and receiving the issues? I received the first six volumes and love them. I read them over and over. I resubcribed in 2006 to receive volume7. My check was cashed and I never recieved any of the issues. None of my numerous e-mails have ever been returned & I didn't see a phone number on the web page. I thought the magazine may have gone out of business and didn't think anything else about it. I was just browsing the web and see that the site has been updated. 2006 and 2007 issues were published. Anyone have a take on this matter? If so please share. Like I said I love the traditional information in this magazine and would subcribe again. I just don't want to throw away more money.
  7. MBrothers, check out ABANA for Clay Spencer's inline treadle hammer plans. Clay Spencer also had plans for sale at one time for a swing arm type treadle hammer. Google Bob Warner of Warner Knifes (?). He sells plans for the treadle hammer pictured on his web page.
  8. Handyman, do a search for Acrobend. They produce benders that are exactly like the di-acro units. They even advertise their parts as being usable in the di-acro benders. On their site they offer an exploded diagram of the unit including all nuts and bolts. Alot of engineering went into these benders, then alot of machining and this equals alot of cash out of your pocket to get one. I hope the exploded diagram helps you. You should find the diagram in the model 625 owners manual. I started a thread in the blacksmithing forum a while back titled, rate your hand benders. LarryM posted a link to plans for a hossfeld type bender that is a little different than the "bender similar to the hossfeld #2plans".
  9. Mtforge, does using the di-acro unit to bend hot metal cause it any problems? I see these benders use grease packed needle bearings. Is hot forging scale and other crud an issue with them?
  10. I've been looking around the web at the large variety of hand benders (hossfeld, di-acro, harbor freight ...). I would like to know what you smiths think of the various benders and what you have in your shops. Do you use these types of benders? Pros and cons of different models. Do you use yours for hot or cold work? Basically tell whatcha got, likes & dislikes, and what would be on your wish list if you would even want one.
  11. Search youtube for Tom Bland (iron bugs, video one). This is about a nine minute video of him using his di-acro bender. Looks easy. I don't know how well the unit would hold up to hot bending but it sure looks fun to use on the cold stuff.
  12. I've lost an article that compaired propane and acetylene as gasses for heating purposes only. I know acetylene has more uses such as cutting and welding. What I would like is opinions and comparisons (prices, btu, general ease of use) between the two gases for simply heating local areas of bar stock. If memory serves me correctly the article leaned toward a propane/oygen mix for spot heating. Thanks
  13. I've been looking at the Old World Anvils web site and like what I see. I'm wanting to purchase a new anvil and the prices they offer are better than most others. I know the horns are not machined and left as they came from the mold. I would like to hear your opinions on the anvils they offer. Thanks for your replies.
  14. I'm in the process of putting together a guillotine tool (the smithin magician) and looking for suggestions on what type of steel most smiths are using for their dies. I was looking at 4140 and O1 but want to hear what others are using for their die stock. Any pros or cons to the 4140 or O1 would be appreciated. The 4140 is a little cheaper from the one source I've been looking at. Thanks for all replies.
