Class Description: This basic class in blacksmithing will give you the knowledge and experience to know if this is the craft you would like to pursue. All basic skills will be taught including drawing out, upsetting, punching, slitting, drifting and welding. Coal fire management and hammer control will be discussed.

Class Description: This workshop will focus on the fundamentals of basic blacksmithing. The primary emphasis will be on learning basic elements of the forging process including; proper fire maintenance, hammer control, drawing a taper, spreading, and beginning joinery. These processes will enable participants to work on individual projects. The goal is for students to leave with the skills needed to create functional object and to develop a better understanding of being a maker.

August 26 -30, 2011: Forged Sculpture: Circles and Angles with Fred Crist

Class description: In this class we will explore the forging of angles and circles, through upsetting, forge welding, riveting and wedging. We will take all the above examples and apply them to creating both functional and sculptural works. This exploration will carried to extremes and push your limits of thought to expand your horizons. Come prepared to create something new at the forge, bring sketch books and drawing supplies as well as an open mind. Basic blacksmithing skills are required. August 19 - 23, 2011: Forged to Finish Hammers with Brian Brazeal

Class description: This class will be about the steps to forge hammers and the use of those hammers. Students will work in teams of two, with each teammate striking for the other and experiencing the forging from both sides of the anvil while learning the steps to make a hammer. Students must be able to use a 10 – 12lb sledge.
