Mark Ling
How I light my coke forge is that I take a paper towel, put some veggie oil on it to make it burn longer, light it, and then put on some small little twigs, working my way up to stick the size of my thumb or a bit larger. once that is nicely lit, I turn on the air on the lowest setting, and put some coke around the edges. I increase the amount of coke on my fire as I increase the air. More air=more coke. I do that until I have the amount if coke on the fire as I want for the size of fire I want. obviously the smaller the fire I want the less air, and less coke. once it is lit, I normally lower the air just a bit. But, why am I taking, this subject has been covered numerous times. Here is some of the previous threads I was able to find. I thought there was one more recently? http://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/40674-how-do-you-light-your-forge/?page=3 http://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/5827-help-on-lighting-a-coal-forge/ http://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/33609-forge-lighting-question/ http://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/22658-how-do-i-light-my-stupid-coke-forge33/ http://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/3367-starting-a-charcoal-forge-fire/ just a few I found in a couple minutes of searching. cabledawg
Same here. Wood coals from the stove, pile on the coal while keeping the air going and in about 5 minutes it's good and hot.
Tubalcain2
me too. I have a pot i use to carry fire from the woodstove to the forge. if the stove is not in use, i usually start my fire with wood and cardboard. i split my kindling on a hardy. works well for me. JHCC
Wood and paper. Lots of kindling (I use the hardy, too). Once the paper is blazing and the candling has started to burn, I switch on the blower. Once the kindling is well established, I start piling coal on from the sides, being careful to leave a hole at the top for the burning gasses to escape. If I start the forge first thing, by the time I've put on my apron, head rag, earplugs, and goggles, made sure all my tools are in the right place, and dug out some nail rod, the fire is pretty much ready to go.
