Heavy Marine Iron

I went to a preview of an Estate Auction in Port Newark, NJ today.  Definitely falls into the category of heavy iron.

I am standing in front of a 13? yd clamshell scoop, used for dredging in NY harbor.  They say it weighs 24,000 lbs.

Lots of anchor chain.

Some parts out of a big crane.  The gear is about 8' diameter.

Anchors.  From about 1500 lb to 3000 lb.

I'd love to have that anchor n 8ft gear. Yep, everyone at West Point an the House of Cards. Get a nip edgy about most anything. Except all the waste they pour into underground n ISS endeavors since the 40s. I'd gave most anything to have been at that auction. Yet ma wouldn't share that thought.lol Thanks for the awesome pictures fellow smith.

I'd love to have some of those big buoys shown in the back of the pict with the chain. I'd love to turn a few of them into replica horned mines  and sink them up where we go to do our SCUBA classes. The big anchors and chain would look good there as well. Come to think of it, most of what I see in those picts would look good if we sank it there.

Lots of neat gear.  Thanks for sharing pictures it would have been a neat auction to go to.

But that's only medium sized chain      I just finished a pattern for some cast steel dragline chain,  each link is 31" long and 517lb

I would love to get just one link of that chain for the museum.  Possible?

I think  it would be possible but I suspect you would be looking in the neighbourhood of $4-5000 for a link plus shipping. They are a high manganese alloy for wear resistance.  If you are still interested PM me and  I can talk to the customer and get an actual price.

The anchors in the photo above sold for $6000.  The pile of anchor chain sold for $2500.  None of it came home with me.  I will get the prices of the other stuff and post them.

JNewman, I would love to get a link, but at that price I think I will pass.  Thanks anyway.

I just got the results of the other stuff in the above photos.  The 13 yd clamshell bucket sold for $40,000.   The pile of crane parts sold for $8000.  The other pile of crane parts for the same crane sold for $20,000.  I guess this stuff was not scrap.  All of the parts will be rebuilt and reused.
