I Forge Iron

Anvil/New Hampshire Cunundrum

Good Afternoon All

I have a cunundrum.

I was given two anvils. So far so good.

I live in Central Florida and the anvils reside, for now, in Gilford New Hampshire.

Looking for cheap transportation for this poor lonely anvils that are longing to get away from such dreadfull weather.

Any ideas?

I'd be happy to move them from snowy cold, windy New Hampshire west across the CT River to Vermont which has a much friendlier climate, forested Green Mountains instead of cold granite NH mountains. I'd give them a nice home, only bang on them occasionally.

Shipping options totally depend on their weight.  UPS will ship up to 150 lbs.  Roughly about $1/lb.  If they are over this limit, look into UShip or other brokers.  Or you could just let everyone you know what you need done and hope that someone is making that trip and could haul for you.

Blacksmith Express. Find a series of smiths who live about 2 hours apart, have the two meet in the middle for lunch and exchange the goods, then repeat until the goods are delivered. Everyone involved wastes a couple hours and gets a chance to meet with other smiths in their area. If only it were that easy....

I used Uship to get my Fisher from Massachuesets to South Carolina and it cost me $200.  Well worth the time it took to secure a bid, and it was delivered rather quickly.  No complaints from me.

The Blacksmith Express is a great idea if you can make it work.  Finding a smith that has the time and doesn't mind the expense.... that's problematic.

If you can figure out how to get the anvils to Central NJ, I would bring them to southern Delaware in January to Gichners event.  I am sure that someone from Virginia will be there to haul them a bit further south.

Or just pay to have them shipped and take the guesswork out of it.

Thank you all for the replies.

It seems that Uship is the easiest/best way to handle this.

The Blacksmith Express was the best price/convenience. :)

A road trip with subsquent stop around Rhode Island to pick up a screw press is also a nice dream.

Once again, thank you for your input.
