I Forge Iron

Procrastination, what excuse works best for you?

Recommended Posts

Procrastination

Putting off a project or task, usually until some time in the future.

I wanted to build a fire in the forge today but ...

I really should finish that project but ...

What excuse works best for you ?

and oh yes what is the project your putting off, and did the excuse work ?

We have pencils and paper ready to take notes for future reference. (grin)

But the weather ain't right... (painting, cement, digging, mowing, carpentry, forging)

We can't afford it.... (works on darn near everything, unless it involves explicitive deleted horses)

Waiting on a part... (usually leads to fighting)

It's late.... (doesn't work, but I'm not giving up on an old standby)

Don't feel like it...... (depends on how much the wife doesn't feel like it either)

Today's non-project is Christmas lights.

Mine always seem to revolve around money.  While I'd love to build a dozen things.....

I'm almost out of fuel.

I don't have the right size stock.

I don't have enough metal.

I don't have the right tooling.

I haven't perfected the design.

My back hurts.

Y'all are making me feel better,  keep them coming!

I did finish one project today that turned out a bit funny.

About a month ago a buddy of mine was at the shop and happened to see some pipe I had just "laying around", an asked if I could cut him a fire ring for his back yard, "a piece of that around a foot long would do perfect!    "Sure" I said, "next time I build a BBq pit I'll cut you a ring". Well my buddy has a better memory than I do so when he texted me today to see if I had got round to cutting it I decided that would be the one project I could finish for the day!  One hour later I texted back that his ring was ready, but he might need some help unloading it.  I don't think many people outside of the metal working world, (and I know my buddy didn't) realize how much a foot of 30" OD 1/2" wall seamed pipe weighs,,,157pounds (by my pallet scale)

For me it's having to clean off the bench before I can start to work. Always seems like it takes longer to get my workspace and tools(if I actually have what I need and don't have to make something else 'work') in order than it does to actually do the work, and by the time I have gotten myself set up I'm practically out of workable time or its too late to be making so much noise :'(

You can't afford me doing that.....see the guy down the road......

I've an old Dart Board and in the shop and when a "To Do List" item comes in I add it to the board. When I get pressured to do something I throw a dart and start what ever I hit. So far I've missed the board completely 25 out of 25 times, no item hit no work needs to be done. As this is wearing a little thin my next idea is to add blank pieces of paper to the board and get better at throwing the darts.

  • 2 weeks later...

My excuse: It's minus thirty degrees celcius in my shop.

That was my excuse last year  but wont your forge warm it up?

This year my excuse is I dont want to burn out my forge lining and empty my propane tank if all im doing is making something small.

"Ill make that pair of tongs when I start on that larger project" I say..

2 weeks later I have a dozen small things on the list and I run outa time to do any of it
