I Forge Iron

Sundays Score

Recommended Posts

This was my sunday score.  there are still items hiding in peoples basements.  all you need to do is ask around.  I also purchased a dozen tongs, flatter, hot cut, and a few other hardy tools.  I'm picking up a old cast iron forge, forge blower on a stand, and a post vise from the same person next week.  I know how we all love pics on here, so I thought I would show what I got.  The small vise will be great to hold my blades for file work.  I was pumped when I saw all the items in the corner.  Like a kid in the candy store.

I know.  I felt like I found a treasure chest.  Now I get to teach myself how to use every thing.  I will post the actual weight of the anvil as soon as I get help lifting it.  I know you asked if anyone had a early fisher over 200lbs.  I doubt this is, but it will be close.

I am soooooooo jealous of you Yankees! Every time someone scores some great find and posts on here it's up north, we truly just do not see these kinds of hidden treasure troves like that down this way. At least I dont! Did ya'll take all our stuff in the Northern Aggression? Is that why it's all up there?! Lol, what a find, happy for you while also jealous.

A lot of this stuff was made up north.  The cone mandrel was made in Greenfield, Massachusetts.  I have a friend that's works in a old blacksmith shop in Worcester, MA.  The owners grandfather started a shop in the early 1900's.  The forges and tools are all there, but the shop just does metal fab work now.  he won't part with anything.

I will be very interested to find out how much the anvil actually weighs.  The 1870's was a transition time for Fisher.  They began to make big anvils for the industrial revolution market, and to compete with big European anvils.  I am always looking for over 200 lb anvils from prior to 1870.  I have not found any yet.  My biggest anvils from the 1870's are 400 and 500 lbers.

  • 2 weeks later...

I went back to get the rest of the items from the same person. I can't find a manufacturer name on the forge or the vise. I have the exact vise already in use, so this one is going to my little brother. I'm not sure the purpose of the angled hammer. Any idea?

That took ALL Sunday? Seriously great score you live a charmed life.

Spanky: if the Northern thing was a factor I wouldn't be able to walk for all the blacksmithing gear on the sidewalks.

Suffering acute tool score envy.

Since it doesn't look like a traditional cutlers hammer, I would assume it is due to wear. The guy who trained me to shoe horses had a clipping hammer that the face had tilted that direction because of pulling clips so many years with it. The other option is that the smith had bad eyes, and had set his anvil too high and had to dress the heel of the hammer to be able to strike flat without tearing his shoulder up;-)

There are no words to describe my jealous hatred of you here on a family friendly forum.
May I ask what this haul cost?

I can only hope it was in the thousands I could not afford, because if you say it was only a hundred bucks or something, my head may actually pop off my shoulders!

<_< Congratulations!

Now go have some fun!  ;)

Only $1,100 for everything.  The first thing I ask a price on was the anvil.  When he said I'll take $75 for it, I knew I had to buy everything.  I told him it was worth more than $75 and paid him $100.  That happened a couple times where I gave him a little more for what he had.  Watching the American Picker show, they always say to buy it if you see it because you never know when you will see one again.  So I bought everything.  Now its all protected by ADT in my Garage.  I'm still pumped by the purchase.  All from just asking around to everyone.  That's How I purchased my first anvil, a 100lb Fisher from the 1860's. It was buried in the ground outside a small foundry. That only cost me $60,  So to all those who are wanting, get the word out and have some cash ready to buy.  i've been asking around for two years now and trolling craigslist daily.  deals will pop up suddenly and go away even faster.  Last fall I scored a 176lb Arm and Hammer of craigslist for $160.  The guy was asking $200.  I showed up at his house at the time we agreed to, but he forgot.  I waited the 40 mins for him to get home and he gave me a $40 discount for waiting.

WoW - WoW - WoW!  :)

A Remarkable Find.

As a blacksmith you were blessed with finding some fine tools.

Now, bless some one else by using those same tools to create useful

and eye pleasing products!

Good for YOU!

My best wishes to you as you contribute to the Blacksmithing Craft!
