New anvil I.D.

Oh glorious day!!! Finally a real anvil! I've moaning and groaning lately about how hard it is to find one of these. I got this 103.4 pounder for 150$. Right in my old stomping grounds from my old buddies dad. Fear not fellow newbies. If it can happen to me it can happen to you! Now vets; please help me I.D. this baby. It rings nice (magnets soon), and its got a face plate so its pre 70's. There are square holes on its sides and on the bottom. What are they for? I love this thing but I'll never part with my first anvil. A rail track with a welded plate on top. Good ol' 7 hole.

U.S. was an early hardware store stamped Hay Budden.
Look on the front foot for a serial number.

Looks like a 5 near the handleing hole under the horn. Thanks Blackfrog.

Look further down on the base of the foot under the horn.
Might take a wire wheel to make out some numbers, but usually a serial number on the base of the foot.

Jock Dempsey wrote something that I didn't knew for a long time, there was a forth hole in most(?) forged anvils:

 

 

 

The body block starts as a simple rectangle with 4 handling holes (-). The handling hole in the top is plugged in the last step before welding on the hard steel face.
