winterbear
So this is probably oversimplified but with the right dies and settings can a obi press be used in hot metal forging/pressing? the machine in question is a Johnson 27OBI press punch chris
Ric Furrer
Grant and others have done this Chris: I recall a one armed smith wrote a NOMMA article about this maybe 15 years ago.....though I do not recall anything specific. Ric
781
I watched a demo at Bob Bergmans years ago They used cold punch/chisels to forge lines and designs in cold metal and also made a penny scroll in hot iron. Said most important is to have the belt loose enough to slip if the material is too much to move in one whack. If you break the crankshaft the machine is junk but if the belt slips then you can make changes
dkunkler
This subject has been discussed here before including using it hand powered like a flypress. Do a search in forums for "punch press".http://www.iforgeiro...h&fromMainBar=
winterbear
Thanks guys , not sure why my search didn't turn up anything yesterday, today I got a few results. I now understand the limitations of this type of press if it was a bit smaller I would try just running it by hand as seen in another thread and youtube vid but I think this machine is too large, even as it is priced below scrap chris
Madmike
I love the induction nearly instantaneous heating in Grant's vid !
ohiomatt
yes, an obi can be used to forge hot steel...I have used one and setting up my own.. however...rule one...the press can not stall...you have to let the ram cycle...or it jams..and it SUCKS to get it free
