I will say that sometimes it's tough to refrain from giving folks chaff over "pretentious" user names. I try to rein myself in when I see a new person with a name like *smith when they have never even made such an item before and are asking the most very basic of questions on how to get started. It does often indicate that they are *young*---probably not what they wanted to appear as.

How's about "green"smith, or "tinhorn"smith,
I thought of one of them handles but it'll be a few years before I earn the title.
I'm getting pretty good at making some things though, like smoke, pot hooks, divots in my soft homemade anvil

If the need to convey the inflections of sarcasm or jokes perhaps an emoticon should be employed

This has turned out to be a very interesting thread ... my last post here garnered me a "Fatherly" warning from Glenn. Mea Culpa! Never meant to be mean, but ratings mean different things to everyone and braving the waters by posting seems to include getting some kind of response to whatever you put on the page. I have seen responses that are clearly done with kindness and some that are tongue-in-cheek humor and some are none too complimentary. When I was in school, very long ago, some students never asked questions or offered comments - they couldn't stand taking a chance on the reactions of others. Others of us don't care what reactions we generate, we just want to learn. There can't be any stupid questions. Just because someone explains the how and why of something, doesn't mean that the student fully understands. Perhaps that's why the apprentiship programs worked so well. Everyone learns differently.
I appreciate everything I have learned here. It's just amazing. And I can't wait until I have more time to put that knowledge to more work. I don't have decades of experience and don't have many tools, but I am smart and can learn, just like many of the other folks here who don't actively participate. Carping about the rating system, is okay ... it's a forum and everyone should be able to share their feelings - as long as they play nice of course.
I use the name my mother gave me. If I chose another name to use here, I wouldn't understand why it would need to meet the standards of others. Names mean something to the bearer first, then to others. Sometimes we have to grow into our chosen names as well as our given names. Who knows why someone wants to call themselves something? I saw the movie "The Vikings" when it first came out. I was 11 and thanks to modern technology I still see it every year or so. In another life I would be Ragner, or perhaps Einar and have a shield and some maille I had taken from a dead foe and might come over your wall one night ... but for now I am Tim and I have to stay home with the wife, so everyone is safe.
Whether we like the rating thing or not and in spite of our feelings about it, it's part of the system we have here. Perhaps it's time to close this thread. Sorry to go on so long.
Thanks for letting me be part of this and I apologize for any offense presented here.

OO-S Object Oriented Smith?
SDS Self Deprecating Smith?
What I don't do well with is "Death Smiter the soul sword smelter" who then asks---"how do I light the forge?"
I see a kid in his room w/a video game and a fantasy..."The Sword Smelter" a few cliks and maybe I can do this.
How do you light the fire? Responce , and out to the garage. or
No responce , back to the game.
Close the thread? 2900 hits.

I don't like emoticons myself; too cutesy in my book; but others can play as they like.

Dunno quite why but it does put me in mind of the "rabbit scene" in Monty Pythons Holy Grail when I hear names like "Thor Hammer of the Gods" etc etc etc

I do know that I get crabby when my blood sugar gets low and try to watch my posting (you should see the ones I write and delete without sending!); but I do get frustrated at times at getting the same questions I answered 3 times earlier the same week. Would be nice if folks did their homework. Frosty took over some of the heavy lifting as when he posts I will often not as we give much the same type of advice. Though sometimes if there has been some misinformation posted I will do a "what he said" post to emphasize the *good* stuff.
I generally like to say that some information is bad not that the person who posted is a stupid idiot who doesn't know squat; as many times people will post stuff they have heard rather than stuff they have experience with.
Thomas who got to fire up Sunday and work on his medieval styled stake anvil---did the hammering of the 2.5" sq stock shaft at a shop with a *big* powerhammer and now am dressing the tenon to hold the head to fit the hole in the head.
