The axle of the roller came out because I had omitted safety wiring it like I (almost) always do. Had a hose blow off from a loose clamp and the tup-up-at-idle cam came loose. Teething problems that are trivial in the cosmic scheme...

I towed the hammer trailer down to the knife makers' show in Marriottsville, MD at midday. Light rain all the way but no big deal. Kerry Stagmar had a very nice tent erected and had one corner reserved for the hammer. There were already guys manually banging away on knife and sword steel. Kerry had his old I-beam style Iron Kiss running. ...

I worked on the mill much of the day squaring to length various pieces for the next Octagon 50 build. I also had a guest stop by to try out the 50, 75, and 100. After a while he spotted a cavalry coal forge and opted to buy it, then we went to my home place where he inspected and then bought a fine old cone mandrel. He also wants to buy a lathe...

Well I hope I got this right.

I took some vacation this week and have taken the time to set up my make shift forge so I can start working on my basic skills. I was able to find some useful junk in the brush around the house. I found a section of 8" stove pipe, a 55gal barrel lid, and 6 pieces of 4'x 1/2" rebar <img src='http://www.iforgeiron.com/public/style_emoticons/default...

I had an order to fill for one of my customers, so that was first priority today.

Then took the truck for its pollution testing where it passed. What a relief compared to the old Silverado on the simulator. They just plugged the Ford in and it passed in under a minute. Then went home to dig into the old forge's iron rack to get a half dozen...

To start, let me say that I've been a bit unaware of some comments in the past. In particular, Mad Mike, I'm sorry. Didn't mean to neglect or ignore you.

Mike asked if a particular stroke completion sensor he has in mind will work, and I simply do not know. We want to control the reciprocating tup so that it contacts the work piece...

So if you tried and it didn't work, please try again.

Today I did a stroke adjuster handle assembly for the Octagon 75, did a welding job for a long time business...

Dan and Judy Boone last week end, Dave Hammer who is a constant friend, Roger Smith from Richmond, Randy McDaniel, the Albin D'ski........the list goes on and on. Today I delivered a job to a former school teacher so she could mount a big school bell in her front yard. She was quite happy. A...

Today I did a production run of adjuster bolts for the V-guides. The lathe has been set up with the centered threaded collet and I wanted to anneal some die blanks. When preparing the vermiculite I remembered the bolts in the container. I used a slick machinist's magnet to get them out before placing the hot die blocks in for very slow...

Much of today was devoted to preparing some more words for the web site, measurement, sketching, studying catalogs, calculations, inventorying cleaning, recycling machine shop scraps, ordering more steel from two different suppliers, banking, etc. I did do some machining. Just one of those nickel and dime days I have to go through to get to the...
