  1. I have a crude first time project of a new very large industrial SKS bearing race that I have split, heated and hammed straight. Its really hard to work with.
  2. I too have a similar problem, lots and lots of hard steel I use around concrete block making and hard wearing metals in a concrete batch plant mixer, plus a ton of large concrete breakup gun broken bits.
  3. I'm a newb here but sometimes a fresh eye can see something different. If you have a setup that works for you but you have a problem with noise then build a sound wall. Many years ago I build the equipment that manufactured hollowplank fiberglass wall filled with chipped tire material as a sound deadening wall for freeways in California. It would not be difficult and you could get creative as you want and build some moveable "sound" walls, styrofoam, old mattresses, egg cartons, even a stack of tires around your work area would create a sound barrier. Places that sell office equipment sell these, Graingers or even Costco. I like the idea of random styrofoam pieces like what you see in anechoic chambers. my .02.
  4. I'm new here, I'm in Alaska and thinking about some hobby knife making, where I work as a fabricator and mechanic I have access to some really tough steels that we use inside like concrete batch plant mixing machines, also is mold boxes used to make concrete block, and what we call "breakup" guns, large air tool chisels that have these really tough bits, I have reground the tips quite often for my workers and can say they give off some nice snowflake sparks, they do however don't like side pressure on them and so I have a bucket of these broken shoulder bits, they are usually at leat 10" long and I think 3/4" round, some are bigger yet. I was wondering what specifically to look for in a good steel, off hand I am willing to experiment wrapping chainsaw chain around these and hammer welding it into a billet for knives. Either that or stick weld 8018 rod, I do have lots of hardfacing rod. I have also some incredibly tough near impossible to bend truck tire mounting tools, I think this steel could make a good strong spine for a knife as well if not a sword. Also I have a good collection of brass bushings and lots of large roller bearings. Thanks.
