Daily posts of a power hammer builder

Dug out a motor-less 5 hp air compressor this morning early and by 8:00 or so I had it cleaned up and painted. The plan is to put on the motor gotten Monday and get it running. Worked on the 100's pneumatics all day. Did go shopping for paint and whatnot. Details of the plumbing work are tooooooooo boring to relate. Grant just told me my...

New forge form liberated steel

Today i decided to upgrade my forge from a fire brick nightmare, i used all scrap bits of steel that were just lying round the yard and some not so scrap bits, (sorry dad). I used some 5mm x 100mm plate for the base and 50mm x 50mm angle for the sides, i also managed to liberate an old compressor from a skip cut one end off end welded it the base...

The notebook of a Beginner from Canada
Hot hot hot!

'ello again! Yesterday I fired up my forge for the first time after adding another inch of insulation and upgrading the blower to a shopvac. After about an hour of practising some basics for hammer control (drawing out, tapers and curves mostly), I decided to put the regulator up to 10 PSI. I had two workpieces, one in the fire and one...

VICE-MOUNTED BENDING FORKS

VICE-MOUNTED BENDING FORKS USED TO BEND A VARIETY OF CURVES There are many good ways to bend curves in steel and iron. Many blacksmiths bend curves over the horn of the anvil, whether the curve is ½ inch in diameter, or five feet in diameter. When striking hot steel over the horn of the anvil, one by necessity has to leave hammer marks on the...

My adventures
No 5

Well found a suitable stump to mount my new anvil on. This piece of what ever has a 5 1/2" X 5 1/2" x 9 1/2" socket in the underside so I cut a 5" tall post out of the top of my stump to fit in the socket. This solved the issue of how to keep this thing from walking on top of the stump. I mounted it yesterday afternoon it took...

My path
The begining

On a dark and stormy night....really, it was! My mother hands me a book, "Back to Basics". Bored out of my mind, I start flipping through the pages. I soon come across a brake drum forge....and the fever set in. Then it's a mad dash to get all these parts with as little money as possible. One week later I have everything I...

Occasional observations and ramblings
Gloves

A few weeks ago I was at the NEB open forge and more than one of the guys was wearing gloves the entire day. Some wore the standard leather work gloves with the cotton backing and one fellow wore "fireplace" gloves made for high heat applications. I don't wear gloves and the one time I did I nearly burnt myself good because of a...

Carbon diamonds or wood charcoal without secrets

Carbon is such a common and complex element. Its properties influence the extension of sphere of its usage. One of characteristic features of this chemical element is the state with unregulated structure – amorphous carbon (smut coal, charred coal, wood coal). Under the common conditions it is inert. Under the high temperatures it combines with...

cross country touring

Hello all, I have never posted a blog before, but I decided to give it a try. I am taking a cross country trip this June to soak in what this country has to offer and also the hopes of meeting some great new friends. I am traveling from Georgia towards Tennessee and then on to the west coast. I am looking for some work along the way to make the...

Updates Beyond a Forum Entry
iForge Dev Update: Crossing the Appalachians

During the holiday season, I spent several weeks converting I Forge Iron over to a more tightly woven system. The system was originally built in pieces and bridged together, but now each section is in the same land mass. A few weeks after the conversion, we upgraded the blog, gallery, and content management system. And with the generous donations...

What goes on in Rhyfelwr's head
Uh, first post!

I've clicked on "Blogs" before and I don't remember there being anything here, but apparently today there is! So I made one. I am not exactly sure what I will end up putting up here. Right now I am not forging anything, I am out of town and because of that I am not near my equipment (not that it stopped me before). I am...
