I too am really looking forward to Quad State. For those who don't know me, look for the guy with the funny hat. No NOT a disreputable hat, that's ThomasP. I have a totally new hat design. I am planning to bring a fair supply of eggs and bacon for a Saturday morning feed. i will also be somewhare close to TomC if at all possible. Juggle guy is off work, so he is coming again. The boy is getting BIG!

Saturday night and am happy to be home. Was out running around this afternoon and the Silverado died. Actually, it wouldn't fire when I went to start it. So I called #1 and she came and picked me up. The fortunate part is that I was close to home whereas I had been 40 miles up the road a bit earlier. Later, I was able to reach my land lord and talk him into fetching the Silverado with his big rollback. We just got back. It's now parked in front of my shop. Quite probably the ignition module inside the distributor cap is bad. He has had the affliction with one of his Chevies. Before that adventure I finished cleaning the Cincinnati grinder, temporarily wiring it, diagnosing a circuit breaker on the electric starter, detective-ing the nine adjustment axes, and finally test grinding a few mill bits. The grinding wheel spindle has three axes, the collet holder has three regular axes plus two pivoting axes and an axis for doing spirals. I have collets for 1/2", 3/4", and 1" straight shanks. I need a few more sizes, especially 1 1/4", given the dull bits that have been accumulating since '96. I was on my way back to the shop to start on the newest hammer's tup. That hammer's gotta be finished in a couple of weeks. What with quad states and an SOB truck I may start feeling some stress.

Tha flat leather belt on my lathe broke last week. It was 2 yr. old, and run dry with a lite coat pine resin based belt dressing on the contact side. It had only seen light service. The one before that lasted about 20 yrs of heavy use. It was oil soaked when I got it. It was treated with the same belt dressing a couple of times. One reference I saw says that they should be treated with neats foot oil. Macheinery's handbook says oil of any kind will shorten their life and recommends actually degreasing them with solvent. What is the opinion of the assembled Experts? |

John, Leather has to be kept supple so most any sort of oil would help - Neatsfoot would be fine. Mach Hbk probably recommended a clean belt because of the possible slippage against the pulley but I think the combo of dry belt and dressing may have been the death of your new belt. I do not use any sort of dressing but instead try to spend some time adjusting pulleys and idlers until I get everything to run properly. |
