Don't know about a specific people group, if that's what you were really interested in. But...

Hoods Woods had a video in their Woodsmaster series about forging knives in "primitive" conditions. There was a fair amount of traffic on their site, a couple years ago, where people incorporated the ideas into a backpacking trip.

On a trip in Tanzania I saw "lion spears" and crude utility knives that had been forged from rebar. Sorry, no pictures, and I didn't ask any detailed questions. That was a year or so before I got interested in this stuff.

Sam,
Not sure about the smiths in the Sahara but look up info on the Dogon tribe of Africa. They have some interesting smithing history that is still practiced today! I learned about it in an art history class I had to take in college. Made the whole class worthwile!! LOL

I have heard of the dogon blacksmiths, and remember reading many interesting articles on them as well! One praticularly interesting article was the excavation and recreation of a HUGE iron smelter, about 2 or 3 stories tall. I will see if I can find it again, but am SURE I heard and/or read about a tribe of traveling blacksmiths in the Sahara.

Couldn't say about nomadics, but history channel a few months ago had a team of guys building a seige tower in, maybe, morocco or someplace. The carpenter's tools didn't make it, and the local blacksmith hammered out a beautiful broadblade gouge in about 30 mins, which the carpenter judged as better than his $100 store bought gouge. Once you leave the US of A, the Blacksmith once again becomes a staple of every community.
