I don't really see an "advantage" except when there's no power. There is the "cool factor", and I really like to use my post drill. The kids love to crank the handle for ya. I'd be too scared to let 'em close to the vert. mill though.

Slow rpm with heavy feed. Most cheap drillpresses can't run as slow as large metalbits require to work best. OTOH I think the proper solution is to get the proper drillpress not go to a handcrank Many hand crank drill presses have worn bearings that can be just as bad on a bit as too fast a speed.

With a hand crank post drill press, you can drill a hole in almost anything even with cheap carbon bits and don't have to worry about how much pressure to use on the bit to make it cut or worry about burning up the bit because you dulled it or got it to hot from too much speed. Each has its uses.
