The hot cut chisel, cold cut chisel and hardy were recent ebay purchases, I put the new handles on today.

The vice, picks, and wire brushes were picked up at a recent garage/estate sale for under $20 total.

My landlord said I could take any scrap in the yard that I want for my blacksmithing.. I wandered around a couple of the piles yesterday and this is what I dug out.

Recently picked up the following items from an elderly gentleman north of Columbus,Ga. He said that they had been in his family for a long time.

1. An Armatage Mouse Hole anvil, marked weight 83#, shows considerable use and rust pits, face convex. Based on markings, 1916-1927. Am considering light belt sanding to get a better woorking surface. Comments/suggestions?

2. An English weight marked anvil, 140#, face a bit better than the above. Also considering using a belt sander.

3. A post vise, appros 35#, no spring or mounting bracket.

4. 2 cast iron skillets, one pre 1890, which I hope will clean up well.

All of the above for less than $1 per pound.

Default My Find

I install replacement windows, Last fall I replaced a bunch of basement windows in a church. They had bars on all the windows. I took all of them home and checked the type of steel with a spark test and cut and break test.
I was quite happy to find I have 130 pc's of 5/8" round by 40" wrought iron....
The church was 108 years old.

Purchased a English weight marked 0 2 27 (77 pounds) Mouse hole just a few minutes ago. Overall fair condition, a few light marks on the horn and the face is rounded but overall it hasn't been terribly abused. Got it for $150.

I'll keep this one for my younguns and set it up at their height.

I got this post vise the other day it is 5-1/2" across the jaws. It was froze up and would not turn at all. Soaked it in diesel fuel still would not budge. Finally lost my patience and took a rosebud to it. Freed it up wire brushed the screw and box greased it up and made a new spring for it. works like new. The jaws line up straight and don't have a nick on them.

JWB; I'll bet that is a columbian vise. I saw a fellow who put a cap on the back of the screwbox with a zerk on it for greasing---keeps the screw cleaner too. I hope to add that to a couple of mine someday.

Ironrose I'd do the opposite, give them a larger anvil they *can't* mess up by missing and keep the little one as a travel anvil.

I have about a 125# anvil with a broken off heel but a good flat face and ok horn that I use for new students serene in the knowledge that they aren't messing up one of my *good* anvils...
