Acanthus leaves are very difficult to make by hand, because of compound curves. Enrique has a documentary on his website, Art Metal.Com, wich does a great job iluminating this difficult task

Oh, that Acanthus leaf. We call them bears britches in California, and I even have it blooming in my yard. I believe it was used extensively in Greek architecture, like around the columns.
