The City Coal Yard in Brazil, IN that Steve Sells wrote about was $198 per ton for loose coal last July. I picked up 3 ton.

From the most recent Bealer guild newsletter dated April 2008.

I've never bought coal from either of these places. I don't even have a coal forge...

I have used coal from both these sources. Green Valley coal is excellent. The last coal I bought from Monger was fair.

I really don't want to get this thread off topic but how much volume is in a ton. How many 55 gallon barrels would a ton make?

Kevin,
50 pounds is just a little more than half a feed bag, maybe like 2/3 or so. I can't remember exactly. So heck, 55 gallons ought to weigh 350 pound or so. No, here
Specific Gravity Weights Of Materials from READE
coal weighs 69 pounds per cubic foot (with a specific gravity of 1.11 so it's just a little heavier than water).

The coal sources I have identified sell small piece Bituminous (Green Valley is 1/5 inch, Monger's was about an inch), which (according to the chart) weighs 52 lbs per cubic foot. Anthricite is much heavier at 69 lbs per cubic foot. The last time I went to get coal, I took a 4x6 trailer with 14" sides on it. Loaded level it was about 1500 lbs, so the 52# per cubic foot is very close.

If you take a trailer, be sure it can handle the load at speeds you will drive.

Green Valley is 1/2 inch, not 1/5 inch.
