I seem to remeber that there were a range of hammers from this source

the Hercules, Goliath and Atlas I think the Hercules the largest/heaviest and the Atlas the Smallest

Great little hammers

As far as the horizontal/not horizontal issue goes, is it possible that the hammer sags over time as the spring weakens?

Here is an old picture of a hammer with a similar linkage.

I had saved this picture because I have a punch/shear unit identical to the one in the lower righthand part of the photo. Only other one I have seen.
