Default Fairbanks A adjustment

I'm getting some slop in my Fairbanks A. There is about an eigth inch play between the head and slide. It been giving me some slide in the head, resulting in less than square billets. Loosen the 2 front bolts, then the bolt at the top? How tight should that gap be?Thanks bruce

I blieve Sid Sudemeier has the expertise to answer those questions best. I do not have his e-mail handy, though he is on the net.

I adjust gibs on mechanical hammers the same way regardless of brand by tightening them until the ram sticks and then backing off to where a piece of regular notebook or printer paper will just slip between the parts for a running tolerance of about .005 or so, which is fine for ram ways. Of course, this assumes all is square and not tapered, which is highly unlikely.
