Anyone weld SS regularly? Ever weld SS to plain carbon/tool steel? If so, did you use 309? If not, did you get cracks? Did you preheat the materials first? Ever make a mild steel blade and them put a several bead pass on the edge part with some 400 series SS or a tool steel filler?? Anyone try taking a flat piece of plain steel and just running beads on the face in a pattern of SS filler then forging it out and etching for some "cheated" damascus??

I weld a lot of stainless to mild steel and almost always use 309. We have used 7018 in special spots with 309 over top. Some times when we can't get it clean we use 6011 with 309 on top,but our business is rendering which is always greasy or wet.

Farmers used to buy Super Missile Weld from fast talking salesman, they used it on everything, what a mess getting rid of it so the job could be done right.

Cool

I welded alot of stainless steel parts to carbon steel when i worked in the fab shop. Most of the time it was welded with ER309L stick rod if it was heavy plate to SS and sometimes it was just welded with the mig with steel wire.

Here is a good all around rod for lots of different metals Royal 220M.
