One of the things that I have done in the past have been to slowly heat the blade in my gas forge to a dull red then just start moving the blade in and out of the forge to heat all of it to the same temp. My old forge is 24in long with a small door in back so that I can pass stock through. I start the heating in the middle of the blade as the tip will heat up faster. This is also a way to get a good heat soak on a long piece. Just my $.02 worth.
