Default Another sword in the works

Here is another sword I am working on also, a BIG Japanese katana, blade is 30 inches(roughly), with about a foot of tang. I still need to straighten it, the it will be ground and heat treated. This one is 1075, and will get a water quench, with clay coat. I am also very excited about this one, hopefully everything will be good. Enjoy.

Its a little too curved for my taste, but it looks pretty good. I look forward to seeing a completed version.

Oh yeah, I straightened it today, when it is water quenched, it will get it's own natural curvature(known as sori, in Japanese). The dimenions now are:

48 3/4 inches overall with a 34 inch blade

Sam wont some of the curve straighten when you quench it?
I have a a couple knives of 5160 pull down .

Im not into Japanese but arnt they for a slicing cut?Inst that the reason for the curve.

You have done a wonderful job

The japanese katana has the single edge, and when quenched it pulls towards the spine. The curve won't straighten I don't think, I think it will get more curvy when quenched. I straightened it completely today, so th eonly curve it will have will be from the quench. Yes, they are for the slicing cut, but the blade is a bit harder to control and stuff when it has TOO MUCH curve. Thanks alot I am very excited about this one as well.

I guess the soft cooler back wants to warp away from the heated edge?
I thought it looked good.

I think yes. It will have quite a bit of curve after the quench.

Actually it depends on how you quench it. In water you get positive sori but in oil you can get negative sori

For massive discussion on that try www.swordforum.com in the bladesmiths forum.

WOW, so oil will make the blade curve forward? That is crazy!
