Depends how high, but i'll say use "I" beams 10mm thick, and aslong as you want high. Then make a base for the anvil to sit on, weld it all together and walla, an anvil stand. If the ground is concrete and quite smooth it is easy to push along the ground. The edges can be rounded to increase movability. As for the crowbar moving it, it's archimedes principle. i think he one said "give me a big enough fulcrum and i'll move the world" You could also use cinder blocks, and just stick your anvil on top. |

See anvil stand at: Student Forges in the Shop of Donald Stanley. The site might be useful for those wanting to use a stump.

I will be cutting down a large maple tree this Fall and plan to save a chunk for an anvil base. I will surely try out Mr Stanley's method. Thanks for sharing, blksmth. -Scott

Urgent! Those smiths who would like an oak stump for their anvil need to come to Houston immediately! We have about 364,865 anvil stumps laying on the ground. But hurry, solid waste removal is scheduled for next week! :-0

This is my design of anvil base for my ''HOFI'' anvil and for ALL the others too. steel plate 13/4'' cut to the anvil base pattern. two conicel pins are seatting into the anvil to hold it a water can dowen the line of prichel holes the 3 legs are from RHS steel 2x4'' cut in 23 degrees with a steel plate on the bottom. the toiols trat is swiwel and hight adjust. the plat is grinded and the bottom of the anvil too . between them there is a thin layer of sikaflex 11 fc that takes away the noise of forging and acts like a spring while forging Hofi |
