Default Looking for text sugguestions

What Books would be best to teach me general information metal properties and melting points ect. I wanted to learn so I wouldn't be scratching my head when I used a certian metal and expect it to be able to work into something that it just isn't cut out to be.

The Machinery's Handbook, now in the 27th edition, is the all time best reference material for all that and more.Amazon.com: Used and New: Machinery's Handbook, 27th Edition (Machinery's Handbook)

Do a search of John Verhoeven, Iowa state university. He has a metallurgy book for knife and heat treatable steels. It is 201 pages. I have it on my desk top but I don't know how to link it to the message. I could e-mail though.
