FAAARR to simple, Glenn. Sure we can't do something to complicate it?

A touchmark is a symbol placed into the metal to identify it being made by a particular blacksmith.
however, the history of commercial trademarks starts with smiths and guildhalls

Trademark History

if you have developed a unique mark and actually want the protection of the law for it, you would need seek registration, this can be done first at a state level, then at the federal level, and finally internationally

realistically its very doubtful anyone would want to employ your mark to confuse the public (or at least till after your long dead with the exception of Hofi ) but you might be a graphic genius and they may well want to poach the mark itself, at which point having a clear title to the date of its adoption can be very handy.

In the US your State's, Secretary of State handles trademark registrations
in Colorado the filing fee is $50. Its unlikely you would ever need more than that. For an even cheaper proof of adoption, mail yourself a registered letter of the mark. Of course if you post the mark here, that would be proof, as long as the database lasted or if the gallery was open to the internet archive

I can handle simple things, so I started the touchmark collection in the gallery before mills complicates things...
