I don't have any really close neighbors, so that's not a problem for me.
But, I don't like a lot of thick smoke in my own face when I'm pulling a lot of green coal up and onto the fire.
Whin it looks like it's going to be a really smoky situation, I simply toss 2 or 3 balled up sheets of newspaper or a handful of dry sticks from the 'kindling bucket' on top of the fire.
The flame will get rid of a lot of the smoke.

i pay 13 dollars for a 10 pound or bigger bag.

If any of my neighbors want coal smoke, they have to make their own!

I rarely use my coal forge, but when I do I set a 6 ft. stack on top of the hood to draw it up high and run a fan behind me in the shop to help disperse the smoke. No complaints so far. I live in the midle of a very nice subdivision too.

Default Neighbors and coalsmoke

Sabre ,
That $ 13.00 for a 10 lb bag of charcoal is kinda pricey .

Of late i've been lucky enough to get my charcoal for " FREE " , usually in 50+ kgs bags ( x 2 ) a 25 kg bag here in OZ ( australia ) will set me back between $ 35-40 AUD
Coke i get for $ 22 AUD a 45 - 50 kg bag

Last Sunday i burnt up around 4 x 20 ltr buckets full & i was only teaching a newbie , if i hadda been doin' production work it woulda been more .

If i hadda been just burning coke it woulda just been 3 x 4 ltr buckets

I love usin' charcoal , but if i had to go out & pay for it i'd rather burn the coke

Dan, my neighbors are pretty close and I don't have a problem. I talked with them and let them know what's going on. I try to keep the smoke to a minimum. Most of all, I'm a good neighbor :-)

A lot of folks don't like it, but you could use Rice sized hard coal. No smoke. It's just needs to be treated like coke. I'll be posting a bit more on my "Hard Coal" post.
