i have used it before with no problems as for a side draft i have never used it for that the galvinized is not that thick on the mine rusted out after a few years and as long as chimney is flowing air it shouldn't get hot enough to burn the galv. off

I think i may be a bit lucky because when i dident know much bout galvy u put a piece of it above my forge and all the galvy burned off but i never got sick.. Pic attached forge 4 - Blacksmith Photo Gallery

i see what you mean sabre i had my pipe conected to a hood over the old forge i made many years ago so the hood may have took most of the heat and that was made out of a old tank that was steel that i painted with stove paint
