Sculptor Frederic Crist returns to the Center for Metal Arts with a 2 day workshop March 20-21, 2010, to focus on use of traditional blacksmith techniques that can change up the creation and forging of sculpture. We will explore basic skills, process and tools to forge. Form and create individual and multiple pieces, as well as investigate different assembly processes, wedging, riveting, and mortise and tenon. We will explore the use of mass and line in developing ideas and direction in sculpture.

Sculptor and innovative metal artisan Frederic Crist www.facristmetalsmith.com was introduced to forging as a direct manipulation of metal under Jack Andrews at the Philadelphia College of Art, where he graduated with a BA in Sculpture. He became Head Blacksmith at the Samuel Yellin Metalworkers, legendary for its fine crafted architectural works, before opening his own sculpture studio in Waynesboro, VA. Fred’s classes always amp up the imagination and may even radically inspire your sculpture work.
r /> “Fire, Forge and Hot Iron for Sculptors” will be held in the fully equipped metal arts teaching studio of nter for Metal Arts, 1 hour northwest of New York City. The workshop is $340 plus materials. Seating is limited for this hands-on workshop.

The Center for Metal Arts is located in the picturesque farm village of Florida, in Orange County NY, about 1 hour upstate from New York City.
