Pattern Welded Steel

Friday through Monday 8am - 5pm each day
Skill Level: Seasoned beginner and up; working knowledge of forge welding and operating a power hammer highly recommended.
This workshop will focus on the basics of forge welding billets and pattern development. We will cover all the various methods of pattern development from ladder patterns to W's, jelly roll construction and multiple bar construction techniques. Special attention to clean welding techniques, material selection, pattern designing and appropriate uses of patterned steel. Students can expect to leave with a few completed billets. As a technically specific workshop, students enrolling should be comfortable and proficient at forge welding as well as all the basic forging processes.

Class Description
This is a class for those who want to try and see if they would like to blacksmith. The class starts with an introduction to terms and techniques. The techniques include how to hammer, how to start a coal fire, and then to use and maintain the fire. Our first project will be the forging of a fire poker. Next, we will make 'J' hooks and 'S' hooks. If time permits, we will forge and assemble a 2 or 3 hook wall rack and possibly learn to make leaves. Come, expecting to learn something about blacksmithing and to have fun!
