Beginners Bladesmithing
Instructor: Herb Kettel and Nick Rossi
Class runs : February 19 - 22, 2010 (4 days)
8am - 5pm each day
Skill Level: Beginner and up
A journey in to the world of the Bladesmith. This intense four day class will focus on the forging skills needed for blade smithing using 1095 high carbon steel. Full tang blades with slab handle construction will be the primary project. A focus on forging, grinding, and heat treatment will be the core of the class. Basic handle construction, fitting and finish will be covered. Various topics may include, file work for decorative purposes, types of adhesives, pin materials, handle materials and final sharpening. Students should not expect to leave with a completely finished blade as the objectives of the class are to teach and practice the processes, not to produce product . This is not a beginners blacksmithing class and students should be very familiar with all of the basic forging processes.

Event: Advanced Copper Fold Form Workshop
Event Date: 20-February 10 0:00 (Single Day Event)
Advanced Copper Fold-Forms with Ed Mack Sunday February 21, 2010, from 10 AM to 2:30 PM
"Fold-forming lets me see directly into nature, into the relationships between process and material.[ The forms that emerge from the material are truly magical," says copper fold-form inventor Charles Lewton-Brain. The working processes are very close to the nature of the material, and modeling of nature is often apparent in fold forms. Come work with the favorite tools for copper fold-forming: fingers, hands, hammers, mallets, torches, anvils and the rolling mill. There are 6 families of fold-forms, with thousands of variations within each, and if you come up with a new family of forms, Charles offers to let you name it yourself!
The class will be held Sunday, February 21, from 10 AM to 2:30 PM at the Center for Metal Arts, 44 Jayne St. Florida NY 10921. Snow date is February 28. Seating is limited. To register: (888) 862-9577, or go to www.centerformetalarts.com.
