I shipped a hammer today after communication problems. The dispatcher sent the bill of lading to a wrong e-mail and had no verification built in, so if it wasn't for the customer's copy that she sent me the hammer wouldn't have shipped. This customer is a good one and has proven herself to be quite resourceful. The truck driver was patiently...

Advice, Books, and More Advice

Posted by the_zet in Zet-smithing, 08 May 2012 · 48 views

Two weeks have passed, a few things have happened, though very little to affect the status quo.
After asking around the Gville family, I found a friend-of-a-friend that apparently not only was a blacksmith, but may very well be willing to let me use/borrow/rent their forge. A few emails later I found that she was still smithing, taught the craft, and thanks...

l&s, burner, mold, cast iron and 3 more...

Can you identify this item / tool? Here is a tool that was acquired from a blacksmith shop. The shop had several railroad related items also. This piece has what appears to be L & S I.Co on the handle. It is cast iron and the two half moon pieces are spaced off of the case about 1/8 inch which appears to be for venting purposes, both sides are done the same way. Here is a link to more...

The results of my first attempt at a clay temper of L6 steel. The project was mildly successful. I have been selling tools that I manufacture for the last 34 years. Along the way, I have learned a few things about customer service. These principles that I have learned have helped me to satisfy and retain customers that remain loyal to me after many years of intercourse with them.
First of all, I have the philosophy that when someone purchases...

Hammer and Anvil 6: the mysterious allure of sharp knives

http://www.tuckreade...6-sharp-knives/

BALSAM –– It has been some weeks since I updated the blacksmith’s blog, in part because I have gotten wrapped up in the actual craft and have not been as interested in writing about it as doing it. By doing it I mean making a knife from Damascus steel, a process that entails forge-welding...

For the last five or more years I have forged with a variety of simple home built forges and junk blowers, my anvil was a piece of 3" round stock 14" long upended in a hackberry stump!

But this year that changed, early in the year I bought a Royal freestanding hand crank blower; it worked wonders to have a good blower.

Last month I bought an...
